So God Made a Farmer (or in this case a Rancher)

July 18, 2013 by Allison

How many of you watched the Superbowl this year?  Now, did you skip the game for the commercials or skip the commercials for the game?

I do both.  But I’m not here to talk write about football.

What I have been thinking about it this cool commercial that Dodge put out.  Do you remember it?  It is a quote by Paul Harvey talking about that God created the Farmer on the eighth day, for so many reasons.  But all in all its about that God needed a man that was hard working, that would make sacrifices, and be dedicated to the end.  He wanted someone that was tough and could take anything yet still tender and understanding.  It would be a man that would stand up for right in whatever circles he was in and be a proactive member of his community.

In the commercial it always says farmer but I like to slide in rancher too (and not often do I think that rancher and farmer are the same but this time I think we can get away with it).  And they got it right on!  This is what type of people ranchers and farmers are.  And there aren’t too many of the good men left.

I had to watch it again and after I did I thought you all should too.

What’s a Rancher Without His Cow Dog?

July 13, 2013 by Allison

Have you stopped to think about that question?  Any good rancher has at least one cow dog, but more like three or four.  And usually those dogs are good enough to move the cows without any help.  Well that might be over stating it, but we rarely work cows without The Rancher’s Dog.  Even when we are working them through the squeeze chute it is the dog’s responsibility to move the cows along.

Quick side story*
When we were in college The Rancher’s Dog took a spill out of the back of the truck and broke both of his back legs.  We weren’t sure what to do but when I looked at The Rancher I knew that we were NOT putting this dog down.  We began by splinting it but that didn’t keep the bones aligned well enough.  The options were to either do surgery and pin it or surgery and amputate it.  We opted for the pin.  He seems to do well.  Occaisonally we see a little limp and I’m afraid he will end up with arthritis but I don’t think we really could have seen that dog go.  That day was the nearest I have ever seen The Rancher cry.

But on a happier note, he is alive with all of his legs and is a master cow chaser.  When we were moving cows to Badger Hole the heifers were really on the fight.  I didn’t get a great picture of the dogs getting the cows but some other fun ones.

A Little Bit of Beauty

July 10, 2013 by Allison

Its not very often that I brag up the beauty of this little valley, and maybe I should.  I don’t really give it all of the credit that it deserves.

Yes we live in the desert- at least I would consider this desert.  It is SO dry, even on a good rain year.  If I had a penny for every sage brush I would be rich there are so many.

And oh my goodness the dust.  I have a years supply of Q tips that The Rancher cleans out in about 3 months.

There are no streams or rivers.  Ok, there is a streamlet (you know, a baby stream) that runs through the ranch, but that is really all of the fresh water around.

To find trees you have to go deep in the hills to find a few stands.  The Rancher considers the REALLY BIG sagebrush to be trees but I want one that you can climb, build a tree house and take a nap under.  Sadly, we don’t have any.

Have I convinced you that this is a desert and that most of the things that makes a valley beautiful are lacking?

But here and there I do find little bits of beauty, and I might appreciate them more because of the rugged surrounds it has.  The colors of the wild flowers seem so much more alive when they are cast against the monochromatic hills.  And the deep color of the sunsets takes your breath away.  The green of the meadows is so captivating that the distant hills seem to escape from view.

Maybe beauty really is in the eye of the beholder and The Rancher’s Wife is finally seeing a little more clearly.

Badger Hole Day 2

July 9, 2013 by Allison

Your anticipation is at its max, isn’t it?  I told there were two days of Badger Hole and that meant two days of pictures… So where is day two?!

Right here!

This ride I actually got to ride- like on a horse.  And completely KID FREE!  The guys where heading out at 6:30 in the am so I knew this would be my chance to go and leave my children with grandma.  Everyone was happy about that, right?

I have to admit that I didn’t take all of the pictures that I wanted.  First I was just nervous to pull the camera out on the horse.  What if I dropped it?!  Then I was afraid that just as soon as I pulled it out I would need to actually do some real work and chase a cow or two.  I mean, I was here to help so I had better pull my weight.  And I will confess that I am so afraid of The Rancher or any of the guys rolling their eyes at me for pulling it out.

But I did get some and it was so fun!  And I am thinking that The Rancher had better take me out again.  Soon.

Celebrating This Land

July 5, 2013 by Allison

I really love Fourth of July.  And I think it is The Rancher’s favorite holiday.  He loves the fact that it is a holiday that is mostly noncommercialized (did I make that word up?) and that there are no expectations of gifts.  Its a day that we can celebrate and spend time together as a family.  But I really love that we have a day set aside that I can say (or think, because I don’t really go shouting things from the rooftops- but maybe I should), “I’m proud to be an American!”  or I can break out in song singing, “Its a grand ol’ flag…” and its totally ok.  Actually The Rancher might be slightly embarrassed but he can live with it…

I think that I love this day because I really love this country and I feel very connected to the roots, the heritage, and the values that this country was built upon.  Yes there are things, especially political things that I don’t enjoy or I don’t agree with.  But there is also a standard that I have the chance to live the life that I want as long as I work for it.

When we celebrate Independence Day I think that we celebrate in two parts- one the legacy of our country.  This land is filled with battlefields, graves, homes, monuments, museums, ect, that are preserved to help us remember what this country was founded on and the cost of it.  The second part is that this is a land of hope.  There are so many new beginnings and opportunities for new beginnings here.  Instilled in this hope is a mix of feelings of pride, dedication, determination, hard work, sacrifice, success, and satisfaction.

And that sounds like the reasons why I love to ranch.  We are able to preserve the land, preserve the heritage of ranching and preserve the hope of bright futures and new beginnings.

Badger Hole Day 1

July 5, 2013 by Allison

The heifers were ready to move out of their spring pasture and up to Badger Hole.  The ranching men decided to make this a two day thing, which means two days of pictures for me.  The first day they moved them down the highway and over to a corral to hold them for the night.  The Little Cowgirl helped me follow in the truck while The Sidekick rode the motorbike with The Rancher (who is so much cooler than riding with mom in the truck of course).

First Crop

June 25, 2013 by Allison

We are full swing into our first crop of haying this summer.  And the way that summers go it means that everything else is coinciding with it.

Rancher Sr was able to take a few days for a camping trip with his family (which meant that Cowboys Pete and E were gone).  And The Rancher had church responsibilities to tend to a few nights.  But the ever faithful Rancher’s Wife was here!  Actually I did get a chance to help out.  The Little Cowgirl and I got to rake(!) while The Rancher moved water and The Boss was in the swather.

(The Rancher has heard it SO many times, but don’t you think that it is AWESOME that he married a wife that not only knows how to drive a tractor and rake but also LOVES to do it!)

I have yet to get out to get pictures of the swather…  Sorry… I know you are really disappointed.  And I don’t have any picture of raking because I was the one doing the raking!  And… The Rancher bales REALLY early in the morning (like 5 am!) or in the dark when I can’t get a picture so none with the baler…

But I do have some pictures of hauling them out!

The Rancher is loading up trusty 913- the semi.

The Sidekick is giving me two thumbs up for getting to help The Rancher in the semi

Random: I was thinking that Case should really pay me big bucks for all the advertising I do!

The Rancher Playing Cowboy

June 19, 2013 by Allison

I shouldn’t say that he is “playing” cowboy because he really is a real cowboy!  During the summer the guys have penning heifers that they take around to some of the Team Penning and Brandings.  The best part about it is that since he is already there hauling or working the heifers he is available to do some riding and roping too!  Of course as the dutiful rancher’s wife I load up the diaper bag, camera, and lunch box and follow him along the rodeo trail!  Oh, we bring the kids too… I couldn’t never leave behind The Sidekick- he is The Rancher’s biggest fan!

Ranching Dads

June 17, 2013 by Allison

Have you ever heard a rancher say that he picked his job because he knew he was gonna strike it rich?  Ya, its not gonna happen.  We choose this job for the lifestyle.

We raise calves to sell, raise grain and alfalfa for feed and raise horses to ride.  But I think that the greatest crop that is ever raised on the ranch are kids.

When I look at my children, The Rancher’s children, I am amazed at how much our lifestyle is raising them to be people of integrity, even at such a young age.  This was how The Rancher was raised.  In fact, I don’t know how many parents get the kind of yield out of their kids like Rancher Sr does out of his five boys.  Everyone of them is honest, hard working, kind, and generous.  That isn’t just luck but good parenting- good fathering.

And by no surprise, this is how I was raised.  We learned to work and to take responsibility by things we learned from the ranch.  We learned to be accountable for our actions and to take in stride whatever hitches were thrown at us.

Today I am very grateful for the fathers in my life and for all fathers.  But I am especially grateful for the ranching fathers, that use every day to teach their children by the way they live and work every day.  I don’t know if there is any way to teach a lesson than by example, like these men have done.

When the Cowboys are Gone…

June 11, 2013 by Allison

What would you guess would happen when all of the cowboys are gone?

Did you say the horses would get out?  And some bulls?  Oh you are so right!

The Rancher is busy hauling cows  (its one of the other things we do).  Rancher Sr. is out shuffling cows around the spring/summer pasture.  Of course he took along all other available help- The Ranch Boss (The Rancher’s grandpa)  and Cowboy E (The Rancher’s brother).  Cowboy Pete (the other brother that is still home) is at State Rodeo (sending positive mental thoughts right now) with his momma.

Its me. And my sleeping.  Oh wait, I did have The Rancher’s dog…

But have no fear, the trusty-as-ever Rancher’s Wife got them. Alone.

I was dosed with my fair share of anxiety when I c I was dosed with my fair share of anxiety when I came into this world, enough that if I let it, would keep me from trying anything new.

But I refuse to live small and let those fears win.

So every day I choose to step outside my comfort zone and do something scary. It has been the most empowering and liberating thing I have ever done.

Most recently I took on feeding the cows solo. Not a big deal for some but for me it was an experience outside my comfort zone that I needed to conquer, so I did.

It wasn’t as fast as what The Rancher can do, nor was it as pretty, but the cows got fed, the tractor is still running, and no babies were ran over in the process.

What’s something scary you can do today?

No rain. It sucks. As ranchers we not only worry No rain. It sucks.

As ranchers we not only worry if there is enough feed but if there is enough IN the feed to give our cattle what they need when there is no rain.

Fortunately this is no longer the generation of ranching that is forced to rely solely on what the range can provide when it comes to complete cattle nutrition.

Hallelujah for supplements!

These days we have better access to more nutritional supplements to grow the best possible beef. Three cheers to the scientists, nutritionists, salesmen and everyone in between to help us fill the gaps👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I’m going out on a limb to admit this out loud b I’m going out on a limb to admit this out loud but as a ranch wife I love the end to daylight savings... I actually look forward to it! I know, probably an unpopular opinion. While the rest of the world is mourning the beginning of short days and long dark nights, I celebrate the season’s end to the nearly bottomless work days that seem to only stop when the sun has.

Tractor lights and heated shops will occasionally add a few long days here and there for the determined rancher types, but for the most part sundown will close out the work day. And for ranch wives that means the honey-do list, date night, and an early bedtime can finally have their place in the schedule.

Anyone with me?

When You Give a Ranchkid a Pocket Knife… Nothin When You Give a Ranchkid a Pocket Knife…

Nothing is safe at our house right now. We have three little boys, ok one is a teenager and not quite so little, that have begged to have their own pocket knives like dad. Between babysitting, Christmas and birthdays, somehow they all have their own shiny multi-tool and belt toting pouch to keep them in and I’m just not so sure how we got to this point....

The branding season is starting to wind down and I The branding season is starting to wind down and I have to say it’s been the best one yet. And while it’s been good to get the work done, the best part of it all has to be the people.
.
Every single day we head out to brand, we have gathered with our friends, family and neighbors to get the job done. It’s exhausting work but these people make it so much more than work.
.
From the cooks to the kids, every single person is a part of making these days meaningful.
.
Its the old rancher that tells me “get in there, sis” when I’m feeling nervous to rope
.
It’s the ground crew that patiently teaches my 7 year old son how to castrate and brand when he is determined to be in the thick of it.
.
It’s the many kind ropers that give my oldest son countless chances to throw a loop when it might be faster and easier to do it themselves.
.
It’s the families that come together to laugh and play.
.
It has been a trying year but I have to admit, I’m grateful to have these people for it. These people make the tough days less hard. These people make it worth trying.
.
These people aren’t perfect by any means. There are disagreements and frustrations. But in the end these are MY PEOPLE. They always will be.

Not gonna lie, it’s been a pretty challenging week. Snow, wind, mud, puddles and a cow’s nature to dump her calf in the worst possible spot all add up to a lot of work but maybe not a lot of progress.

Branding has come and gone faster than I could hav Branding has come and gone faster than I could have believed!

We just moved from one branding day to the next and then the next and suddenly it was over!

It wasn’t all fresh peaches and unicorn farts (both magical but at least peaches make their appearance a little moser often) but we loved it all-the work, the people, the laughs, the food.

I’d say let’s do it all again except I’m too tired right now 😝. Soon enough (but not really...).

Sometimes I worry that society is turning its back Sometimes I worry that society is turning its back on our heritage. We are being told constantly that “meat” or “beef” or “agriculture” is the problem with, well, everything.

They focus on what they THINK we are taking away from people- clean air or health...
.

But they never stop to think what we are giving, what we have been giving for hundreds of years.
