Hometown Buck-a-Rama

September 26, 2014 by Allison

If I had known all of the crazy things that September would bring I don’t know that I would have believed it.  My calendar at the end of the month looks nothing like what I had in mind at the beginning of the month.  But that’s ok… In the midst of all the craziness I had some awesome family time, a fun trip to Montana with my sister (she lives in New York… like, the polar opposite of my world.  Crazy that two sisters that are best friends could live completely different lives… LOVE IT!!) and a chance to go back to my roots.

The weekend that I was home to Montana just happened to be the weekend that the American Legion was holding an event to raise money for the fair grounds. Funny that until now I hadn’t realized who was responsible for the fairgrounds there.  Where is the fair board, you ask?  There isn’t one.  Our county doesn’t actually hold a county fair.  Instead they team up with a couple neighboring counties to put on a Tri-County fair in Deer Lodge.  Looky there… Learned something new, didn’t ya!

So no fair board, no money from the county, and therefore in need of some creative fundraising.

The highlight of the day was a rough stock buck-out featuring the bulls of a local rough stock contractors, Rod and Bonnie Conat and Steven Graveley.  They may not be PBR material just yet but that very well may be where they are heading.  Some of these bulls were young and inexperienced, but they certainly have potential.  But that doesn’t mean that there weren’t any old seasoned bulls that knew how to put on a show.  I was thoroughly entertained!

I did have one small complaint, and you will see it here in a minute.  They had hauled in a bunch of panels to make a much smaller ring to buck in.  Smart, right?  They won’t have to chase bulls all day to move on to the next one.  But they forgot to think of the lady sitting in the stands with two tired kids crawling on her lap while she tried to take pictures.  So that means that in between you and the action will be some panels and what not.  Just pretend its not there…

Regardless of how the panels may or may not have ruined the ambiance of the pictures, it was still a fun day for a rodeo!

Throw Back Thursday: Cattle Drive From May

September 11, 2014 by Allison

Remember that terrible cattle drive?  That one where there were more cows out in the fields than on the road… I wish I didn’t… That adventurous day was day one of two of our cattle drive.  I know what you are thinking (ok maybe you’re not thinking this…) that if day was so bad, day two must have been horendous and that is why I have to do a little “throw back Thursday” to catch you up on it.
Nope, on all accounts.  Day two went as smooth as… it was GREAT!  Granted, we did have a good road to follow, fences on all sides, lots of cowboys, and a shorter drive.  But hey, it was good!  We will take it any way that we can!
And lets say we learned a little from day one. The Rancher just started the day with a motor bike.  We called up The Buckaroo who brought along his sweetheart and a bull whip.  Both highly useful, just one more so than the other (just to be clear, his girl really is quite the cowgirl!)  And I opted to not try a photo shoot on the run.  I went with the 4 wheeler, kids and camera- its a lot less pressure!

Oneida County Steer Show

September 3, 2014 by Allison

Tonight we are hitting up the Easter Idaho State Fair, a big highlight of our fall.  I’m not sure why we love fairs so much- maybe its the food, or the free entertainment, or that we can wear our cowboy duds and totally fit in.  Whatever it is, we can’t get enough and hit up as many of the local fairs as we possibly can!  In fact, it will be our 4th fair in just about as many weeks!

I big believer in fairs… obviously as now I am on our country fair board.  I really feel like it has a lot to give it the community and especially its youth.  The time, effort, sacrifice, and responsibility it takes for kids to commit and then follow through on all of their projects is huge.  Parents and leaders put in a lot of time to help teach skills to the up and coming generation of ranchers, gardeners, sewers, bakers, photographers, canners, and hopefully leaders.  Yep, I’m sounding a little stuffy and frumpy… but when you take away the rides and rodeos, what you have left is kids learning and showing what they can do.  I love it!

Every year I look forward to the steer show.  I was big into showing (can you imagine me NOT going big in anything I do?!).  I loved taking the time to wash, clip and fit  my steer.  The show ring meant game time and I wanted to win.  And sometimes I did.  Now that I don’t get to (their really frown upon a grown woman commandeering the steer show!), I like to jump in and help give a few of my tips and tricks to the next group of showman.  Who knows if they even want to hear what I have to say, but at least I feel like I get to keep my foot in the ring one way!

But really, these kids don’t need me.  They (hopefully!) have been working and preparing all summer for this day, and as you can see, one way or another, they nailed it!

Moving Cows on a Wonderfully Rainy Day

September 1, 2014 by Allison

You know that we are desperately in need rain.  Every time we have a cattle drive means that we come home covered in dust.  Somewhere there always seems to be a trough that runs dry.  The feed is so dry and not so palatable (not that I would want to eat yucky dry crusted wheat!) that those blasted cows are out all the time.  That all equals some pretty intense praying and praying for rain.

We have had a great answer to those prayers.  In the last two weeks we have had 3 inches of rain.  THREE!  Its been amazing!  There was so much rain that we were having flash floods… all over our freshly cut hay.  With the fields so wet we couldn’t even haul out the bales… with out getting stuck.  We found that out the hard way.  There was so much debris and water coming down that we had some intense back hoe work to be done to get the water following in fine fashion again.  The ground was so saturated that any bit of rain turned into a flood.

But we were so thankful for the rain that none of that mattered.  It didn’t even matter that we had hundreds of cows to move seven long miles… we are just so happy for the rain!  It was muddy and cold… but so wet!

Love me a Little Rodeo

August 27, 2014 by Allison

Naturally, I love rodeos. Everything about them.  I love the crazy rough stock (occaisionally I cheer for them instead of the cowboy) and I love to see a good ride.  I love fast roping, especially now that I have a new appreciation for the art since I started.  I even love the crazy rodeo clowns and their terrible, intermittent jokes.  And as terrible as it is, I love watching the bull fighters run for their lives!

There is just something about the energy in the air at a rodeo that makes me smile.

I guess there is one thing that I don’t love… That’s the terrible lighting at a night rodeo.  I just never manage to get good pictures by the end of the show.  Especially when I don’t have all of the equipment I would love to have or I don’t have close up access (but I’m really ok not being in the arena with those crazy critters!).

Never the less, I do have some fun, great photos from the IMPRA Rodeo when it came to town!

Ready?!

Bringing the Party Home- Team Branding in Malad

August 20, 2014 by Allison

Team branding.  By this time of the summer we are counting down how many are left.  If the heifers could count, I’m pretty sure that they, too, would be on the count down.  The team branding for our fair has to be one of the favorites for me.

Part of it is because we don’t have to travel a long ways.  Phew… For once the stock contractor doesn’t out drive the cowboys.  But the best part that since it is local we see so many of our great friends and neighbors!  Normally at the end I am just praying for these things to get over because we are all tired, cranky, bored, and someone has most likely gotten hurt.  But not in Malad. I’m so stinking busy doing fair board stuff, helping with the heifers, taking pictures, visiting with friends and watching my own kids.  Scratch that last one… with so many friends around, everyone else is playing with my babies that it seems like I hardly see them!

Prepare yourselves for a lot of pictures.  Not all are that fantastic… I blame the light and the timing.  If only I could be in charge of the timing of this shin-dig… But alas, I’m not.  So deal with it.  I would rather share these photos that might not be my best than not show them at all! 🙂

A Day at the Races

August 18, 2014 by Allison

This last week was kinda a big deal for me.  It was fair week.  Normally I only hang out at the fair to support the kids and watch the rodeos.  I have no babies doing projects yet and even though I enter some pictures, nothing is really high stakes.  Being on the fair board this year meant that fair was a whole new ball game this year.  And I am so happy to report that not only did we survive it but we rocked it!  I don’t think that I had a single melt down and The Rancher still loves me.  Sure I heard a few grumbles of the incompetency of the fair board and I did have one lady take a go at me… But we are still in one piece and after a few days of napping I think I’m ready to go again!

We always start the Oneida County Fair with the horse races.  I wasn’t able to go to the first weekend of races because we were too busy playing wedding with The Buckaroo.  (Ps, anybody want to hear about that?  Good, because you will… later…).  The next weekend I was sure to make it to the track.  Especially since I have never EVER been to a race.  It would be a good idea to know what we are talking about when we get the “races” part of the agenda.

By the time the races were done I had a few things figured out, like only cut through the beer gallery if you aren’t in a hurry.  Nothing crazy happened this year (last year the man in the water truck got a great show from the ladies…) but there are always funny comments or people making a fool of themselves.

Most of the jockeys were Mexican and I would have given anything for a Spanish/English dictionary (or just The Rancher available for translation at all times!) to hear what their little wives were telling them.  I knew just enough to know when they were saying they were so proud or the times when they were telling them to man up.  But you might not need any translating for that…

I know for next year that if you want a good spot to watch and take pictures you better park your can for the duration.  There’s no calling “place-back” or “saved-spot”.  To that end I don’t have tons of pictures.  I used my charm to peek my camera through the track gate just after the finish line to get a few fun shots.  But even then there were some crazy ladies hovering over me that got a little too close for this girl’s comfort!

These horse are incredible and crazy at the same time.  They are so fast and strong and wound up SO TIGHT!  The race is only a quarter of the track, but we need the rest of it to get the darn things stopped.  I like to watch them, but I don’t want to take them home!  Hmmm, that’s what I say about other people’s kids…

Before I let you go (because you are totally enthralled with my awesome whit, right?) I have one more funny to share.  As a member of the fair board I helped present the winners with a horse blanket in the winner’s circle and smile for a picture.  By the last race I had learned that I just hold out the blanket and the families with the trainer, jockey, and owner quick jump in and hold it.  As I went to step back this man grabbed me around the waist, “Oh no, pretty lady!  You stay her by me!”  Ok man, I’ll stand here.  I’ll flatter you for the sake of the picture and maybe it will keep you quiet.

But oh boy he kept going, “You want a beer?” “No, I’m good” “Soda? Water?  I buy for you pretty girl!”  I should have asked if it was ok to invite my husband… Maybe then he would have let go for the picture.  Lets just say that he had a great time in the beer gardens and was having an even better time that they had just won!  Then there was something about showing the picture to his girlfriend of him by a pretty blonde…  And that he was sure we would have to ask for forgiveness.  All I could think was, “Take the darn picture already- his hands are sweaty!”  What a great way to initiate The Rancher’s Wife to a day at the races!

Haying on the Ranch

August 11, 2014 by Allison

The Rancher is out baling tonight.  I told him that I was going to bed… but I have some pictures that just need to be put.  Its 10:30 pm and he’s out baling, while I’m in bed writing about it.

We started second crop last week, slowly.  We have been blessed rain this week.  Not a lot, but enough to slow down progress.  We did have a little hay down-its what happens when the weather man cries wolf too many times.  He says that its going to rain, it doesn’t, we cut hay.  Most of the time that works out but not this week.

94.7% of the time we have to work around Mother Nature’s unplanned schedule.  We work around the storms, rake and clean up after the wind, and bale at night when the dew is on (or should be on…  Its why I never have baling pictures!). We could just do it when things are convenient.  The boys would get a lot more sleep, but we believe in doing things right.  Even when Mother Nature tries to throw a kink in the mix.

2014 Stone Rodeo

August 6, 2014 by Allison

Raise your hand if you have heard of the Stone rodeo.  Ok, don’t really.  Someone is going to think you are crazy… but good for you if you have!  If you haven’t, now you are!

The Stone rodeo, practically a Holy Day in this area.  Stone, Idaho is the tiny gathering of homes and ranches near Snowville, Utah and good ol’ Holbrook.  The community is so small that there isn’t a single church, bar, post office, or gas station.  But any good town full of cowboys will have some rodeo grounds!  But don’t let the small town setting make you think that this isn’t a quality rodeo.  Or the fact that the square arena is closer to an egg shaped!  Amateur rodeo or not, they ride hard, rope hard, and sometimes fall hard!

These rodeo grounds are used just the two nights of the Stone rodeo.  Now days the bleachers are all permanent, but back in the day they had to haul in seating.  Except for those that bring their own, and I don’t mean a camp or lawn chair.  Days before the rodeo, the arena is lined with pick-ups reserving their spot and getting them front row seats!

The events at the rodeo are entertaining for everyone to watch or participate.  We have roping for all the hometown cowboys, rough stock for the crazies and dreamers (aka The Buckaroo), milk calves for the kids, and wild horse riding for the brave (or drunk…)!   Every year I can guarantee two nights of hand-clapping-side-ache-laughing-country-good-time-fun!

That puts even my teenage son smelling dinner on the stove to shame 🤣

But that’s just fine. These bulls have a lot of work to covering a herd it in the range. Three months of hard work before they go back to the life of luxury.

Here’s a little breeding trivia (I post the answers in the comments later tonight):
How far can a bull smell a cow in heat?
How long is a cow in heat?
What is the average number of cows a bull will cover in a breeding season?

😂 The contrasting combo in this frozen moment alwa 😂 The contrasting combo in this frozen moment always makes me laugh!

Spurs, chaps, and cowboy hat all perched atop a Honda dirt bike. The Rancher temporarily traded in his horse for his two wheeler counter part to help get the job done and the cows in to brand.

Sure, we love to do everything we can on horses, but there are sometimes it’s just far more practical to turn on the key to the 4 wheeler or dirt bike. It’s not as romantic or punchy, but I have to admit there are times it is the better way to get the job done.

That kind of admission might have just lost me some cred (if I had any to begin with at all! 😂) but it’s true. We use all the best resources we have at hand even if that means cowboy meets dirt bike!

Cows are funny. They are ready to plow you over Cows are funny.

They are ready to plow you over one second for messing with their calf, and then 2 minutes later completely forget they even have one when they see a patch of green grass.

Did you know they only recognize their calves by their smell? Of course they don’t go by tag number, but I’m not even sure they can recognize markings or color.

Which means these lovely windy days this spring has provided can make pairing up cattle a little tricky.

If only a cow could read…

Growing up I knew I always wanted to be a mom, to Growing up I knew I always wanted to be a mom, to raise a family like I had. I had visions of working together on the ranch and quiet nights watching the sunset together. Ya know, the perfect ranch family.

But as life goes, it certainly hasn’t been that easy.

In fact there were parts of motherhood that I absolutely struggled with. It wasn’t the late nights or all the diaper changes. I could handle messes and the tantrums.

The hardest part for me was that I felt… stuck.

I loved the nap time snuggles, the chubby hands in mine, and the shadow that followed everywhere I went. But still I felt untapped, like I needed to be doing more, contributing to life in a meaningful way.

I told myself “this IS meaningful work!” and “seasons change.” But there were so many hard days.

Time went on, kids grew and our seasons changed. And motherhood has never been so meaningful and fulfilling as it is now.

I love watching my kids struggle and then succeed. I love talking through the good days of school and love when they need a hug after the bad. Teaching and walking them through first experiences brings me pride and joy I can’t explain.

All those hard days were worth it.

I don’t know if motherhood was meant to be enjoyed everyday or in every season. But I can tell you the hard days of being a mom have made the good days that much sweeter and that much more fulfilling.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. I hope you are finding joy and fulfillment in every season of motherhood. But if you aren’t right now, I promise it will come.

When you see a handsome cowboy in a pair of chaps, When you see a handsome cowboy in a pair of chaps, did you ever wonder why he’s wearing them? Yes, because they look dang cool but there’s a few other reasons.

Here’s why I throw on mine:
1. Chaps help keep me warm on those cool days. That extra layer is just enough to keep the chill from getting to me.

2. Leather chaps are (mostly) waterproof and help the rain off. Of course, if there’s a ton of rain it will seep through but, let’s be honest, I’d be happy for the problem.

3. When you kneel in the dirt over and over, maybe even in a little poop or blood, chaps help keep you jeans a little cleaner.

4. Chaps keep my pants from a little less wear and tear, especially when I’m ripping. The first place my jeans wear out of I don’t wear chaps is in the place my rope slides across my leg.

And, yes, I do think they look cool and I really want to look like a REAL cowgirl so chaps are a bit of a fashion statement 😉🤣.

Chinks, wooleys, shotgun chaps… ALL the kind of chaps 🥰

It’s my birthday today… so indulge me a moment. It’s my birthday today… so indulge me a moment.

I LOVE my birthday! Not in a get-me-lots-of-gifts-and-make-it-all-about me kind of way. I just love celebrating another year of living.

Over the last year I have made so many memories. I have made new connections and enriched old ones. There have been hard learned lessons I never want to go through again but wouldn’t trade them for anything. I love being a wife and mom but also being a coach, a leader, and a rancher. I love having pretty nails but also building strong muscles.

I love all of this life I get to live!

And I hope you do too.

From one hopeful, happy, struggling, anxiety ridden cowgirl to another and everyone else out there- work every day to build a life that is meaningful to you. And then celebrate it!

PS- no need for birthday wishes here, I’m not here looking for them, just sharing my heart.
“I just want to make my mark.” (Please tell me you “I just want to make my mark.” (Please tell me you are “How to Train Your Dragon” fans with us!)

And depending on how the day goes…
we either do just that…

or make a few marks in all the wrong places.

The delicacy of branding day that no one partakes in, usually.

There’s always a few castrated bits grilling on the top of the branding box and, I’ll admit that they smell delicious. In order to feel like a true cowgirl, I once indulged and it wasn’t bad. But I just can’t really wrap my brain around eating more than just a taste.

I’ve loved ranching for as long as I can remember— I’ve loved ranching for as long as I can remember—though marrying my husband proved I still had a lot to learn about their way of doing things.

It’s been about 10 years since I got serious about roping, and only in the last 5 that it’s really started to click. And now I’m hooked!

Still learning, still improving—but fair warning: if I don’t get to rope, I will absolutely be in a mood about it… but I’ll do my best to keep it to myself.

Did you know we have been running cattle on this r Did you know we have been running cattle on this range for over 100 years? Even before these public lands were claimed as BLM, my husband’s great-great-grandpa raised cattle through these same hills. In fact, this large herd of cows still carries some of those same genetics. Of course there have changes through the years, but we try to do the same they did five generations ago- raise great cattle.

Rancher’s wife tip- consult calendar dates for any Rancher’s wife tip- consult calendar dates for any and ALL possible events, including your child’s birth day.

On this day 16 years ago, my husband left our little college-town home to drive the 3 hours down to the family desert piece to brand. I instead went to my OB appointment where I was told to go directly to the hospital to deliver my baby.

Nothing scary or concerning- both baby and I were perfectly healthy. But of course it had to happen on branding day. I heard the sorted calves loud and clear in the background. And if I remember right, there was a small hesitation where I’m sure he considered staying to brand the first set of calves before coming to the hospital.

Moral of the story- don’t have babies in branding season. It’s best to consult his calendar. On the other hand, birthing little cowboys into such chaos might be the key to them growing into strong, kind, and capable young men.

Tell me I’m not the only one who has to plan life around ranch work

“Hello, Ladies,” said in a low, sultry voice. The “Hello, Ladies,” said in a low, sultry voice. The most subtle pick up line from the Old Spice commercials, of all places.

We may be in the middle of dropping this years’ calves but that doesn’t mean we aren’t prepping for next year already.

Bull turnout will be here before we know out which means we need to have enough herd bulls heathy, strong, and range ready to breed cows all summer long.

For months we have been testing, doctoring, and buying bulls ready. With the last of them being delivered any day now, we will get everything branded, tagged and ready for their final inspection.

There’s still a little time before turnout, but everything is lining up. Bulls getting ready, cows getting close…
And somewhere in the back of your mind, you can already hear it—
“Hello, ladies.”
