A Rancher’s Wife Chicken Chase

October 2, 2013 by Allison

The day started out ordinary and beautiful, and typical of a ranching day, that was sure to change.  The cowboys were gone so something was bound to go awry.

After coming home from getting my hair cut I had a call from The Rancher’s mom across the way.  She was somewhat in distress because the chickens were out.  You may not think that this is much of an issue but I assure, it is.

I wish that we had the picturesque Little House on the Prairie farm where the chickens and bum calves ran around free… Lovely pets that nestle and come at a melodic call.  But that isn’t what we have here folks.

We have wild calves that in their wild roaming they roam into the chicken coop.  They reek all sorts of havoc on that little coop, like dumping out the water, turning over the feed and ruining the feeders.  Of course this inspires more chaos as the chickens have been terrorized and set free.  Chickens wandering free is problematic- first because it means we have to hunt them down and get them back in.  But also because there is someone else hunting after the chickens… the ornery dog.

As good rancher wives we dedicated ourselves to finding the lost chickens, saving them from being dinner, and safely returning them to the coop.  It was a darn good thing that we were dedicated because it took FOREVER to wrangle up those chickens.  Have you ever herded chickens?  I think it is worse than cats.

They had scattered all throughout the sheds where the old junk has collected, the new tractors are parked, and everywhere in between.  We climbed under and over nasty, dusty, dirty, grimy… I actually don’t know what most it stuff was (but I did find a few treasures that would look lovely with flowers planted in them).  But we suffered through it and slowly, but surely, we gathered the chickens one by one back to the coop.

The real hero of the story is The Rancher’s mom, who by the way needs a better “Rancher Wife” blog name than that (if anyone has any great ideas).  She is so brave!   I don’t really do chickens.  I will chase them, cluck at them, gather their eggs, and occasionally squeal because of them but I won’t touch them (read pick them up in ANY sort of way).  But this lady scoops them up without the blink of an eye.  When she can’t just scoop them up she has a handy hook that snatches those chickens, just as if she was fishing.  And as she walks them back to the coop she sweetly reminds them that it is much better to stay in the coop, gives them a pat and lets them gently down.  I was so impressed at one point that I almost told her she was one good hooker lady, but I didn’t think that was very nice…  She has some sort of chicken super powers that any nasty chicken had better beware.

When the Cowboys are Gone…

June 11, 2013 by Allison

What would you guess would happen when all of the cowboys are gone?

Did you say the horses would get out?  And some bulls?  Oh you are so right!

The Rancher is busy hauling cows  (its one of the other things we do).  Rancher Sr. is out shuffling cows around the spring/summer pasture.  Of course he took along all other available help- The Ranch Boss (The Rancher’s grandpa)  and Cowboy E (The Rancher’s brother).  Cowboy Pete (the other brother that is still home) is at State Rodeo (sending positive mental thoughts right now) with his momma.

Its me. And my sleeping.  Oh wait, I did have The Rancher’s dog…

But have no fear, the trusty-as-ever Rancher’s Wife got them. Alone.

More Rancher-Wife-Stripes for me!

Some Time Inside for The Rancher’s Wife

May 17, 2013 by Allison

Being a rancher’s wife calls for more things than being out on the ranch.  Sometimes it requires days spent in the house.  There are the typical cleaning, laundry and cooking that The Rancher always needs done but this is how I spent my morning…

Can you guess what I did?  Here’s a better look…

Yes, those are The Rancher’s pants on the sewing machine (and The Rancher’s Girl keeping me company in the back šŸ™‚ ).   I had been putting it off for a LONG time (some of them have needed to be mended for over a year!) and I got away with it because there was always another pair of jeans that didn’t have any holes… until there wasn’t .  I finally gave into The Rancher’s request after doing a load of laundry and I realized that EVERY pair had holes… So I sat down with the sewing machine and a movie (because I knew it was going to take a while) and got to work.  In the end I mended 7 pairs of jeans and threw out 3 because they had too many darn holes.  And now maybe I can go another year before I have to mend his jeans again!  What do ya think?

And so have I.

There are days I enjoy the quiet working without them, but soaking up these days working together fills my heart. I already fe they are growing way too fast.

But I’m sure proud of the young men they are becoming.

If you ever wondered if God hears a weary, wanderi If you ever wondered if God hears a weary, wandering cowgirl, I can assure you he does.

The days riding up and down the mountain looking for cattle can get long. I had found a pocket of cows tucked under some cedar trees but had quite a ways to get there to them. Crossing through a big wash, I lost track of exactly which trees I was heading for.

It’s silly but I felt defeated and frustrated. With a much closer perspective of that mountainside, everything looked different. I decided to backtrack a little, not wanting to skip any patch of trees that *could* have been the ones.

As I started riding forward I said a silent prayer, ā€Lord, help me find these cows.ā€

Less than 30 seconds later, I hear a single ā€œmooā€ behind me. I whipped around to see just the nose of a cow poking out behind the black shade of the tree.

I had found the cows!

Let this be a little reminder that God cares, even about helping find cows on the mountain. You just have to ask for help.

Yes, the American beef herd is shrinking. We all k Yes, the American beef herd is shrinking. We all know that. And it’s a REALLY valid concern.

But did you also know that annually, ranchers are producing more pounds than the year before? Since 2023, we have averaged nearly 50 pounds more per carcass!

That doesn’t mean the shrinking herd isn’t a supply problem—it clearly is. But it means head count alone doesn’t tell the whole story.

These facts tell me that ranchers are doing all they can, despite challenges like rising input costs and drought conditions, to provide beef to American families.

If we really want to support producers rebuilding their herd, here’s my suggestion:

Lower our input costs, not the price of our cattle.

And let’s start with fuel. Because that not only supports the American rancher, but American families as well.

If you want us to raise more cattle, help make it more affordable to raise them.

If you could make one change for producers, what would it be? Tell me in the comments! šŸ‘‡šŸ»šŸ‘‡šŸ»

Direct-to-consumer beef is a lane, not a highway. Direct-to-consumer beef is a lane, not a highway.

Every time we talk about the challenges facing the beef industry, I hear the same solution: Why don’t consumers just buy directly from ranchers?

There’s a place for direct-to-consumer beef. I believe that. But as a cow-calf producer, I also know it isn’t a realistic answer for most ranchers—or a replacement for the system that moves beef from the ranch to grocery stores and restaurants across the country.

The problem isn’t that every rancher needs to find a way around the beef supply chain. We need to look at how we make the system itself more competitive.

Four years ago, I wrote a letter apologizing to my Four years ago, I wrote a letter apologizing to my kids’ teachers for the fact that my ranch kids had spent their summer doing everything except what most people would consider ā€œschoolwork.ā€

Four years later, I owe their teachers an update.

The ranch still doesn’t do worksheets, summer reading schedules, or packets of problems to complete before lunch. But it has continued teaching some pretty important lessons—responsibility, problem-solving, consequences, patience, hard work, economics, and eventually, confidence.

They may not all show up on a report card, but I’m beginning to think they belong on one anyway.

I’ve learned that ā€œquickā€ is a relative term when I’ve learned that ā€œquickā€ is a relative term when spoken by a rancher.

A parts run can become a multi-town scavenger hunt, and checking water can turn into fixing fence, chasing cows and solving the world’s problems over a barbed-wire fence.

But somehow, I still climb into the pickup every time. Am I the only one??

When a broken water system, wandering cattle, and a handful of unexpected problems all hit on the same day, everyone on our ranch had to pitch in—even the youngest hands.

It was a reminder that on a ranch, there’s always work for someone willing to learn, and today’s little helper often becomes tomorrow’s dependable hand.

Silver lining- I get to be in the air conditioned house instead of sweating in this summer heat šŸ˜†.

But it makes me wonder- what would you choose?
Moving cows?
Roping?
Planting?
Working cute side?
A day in the shop?
Building fence…? 🤪

That puts even my teenage son smelling dinner on the stove to shame 🤣

Here’s a little breeding trivia (I post the answers in the comments later tonight):
