At the County Fair

August 16, 2013 by Allison

Oh how we love fair week!  I thought I would drop a line to tell you I am still kicking, just busy playing at the fair.  I don’t have any pictures for you today… Sorry about that… But soon, very soon!

In fact, I don’t know if I have told you or not (I don’t remember very well) but I am having camera problems.  One afternoon I picked it up to take some pictures and I noticed the sensor had gone haywire.  I took it in praying it was a simple fix.  Of course it ended up being bad enough we had to send back into Nikon.  That was two weeks ago… I checked in on it and they haven’t even done the diagnosis yet.  I am beginning to feel IMPATIENT!!  Thankfully The Rancher’s mom has the same camera and will loan it out to me when she’s not using it.  But then I still need to grab pictures from her… I know, I am letting you down.

So lets talk about the fair instead, it is much happier to chat about.

Even though we don’t have any kids old enough to be in the fair, we still have been averaging about one trip a day and which are usually followed by LATE nights.  Starting with Monday, the Team Penning and Branding that besides The Rancher roping we also provided the heifers.  This is such a fun one to go because so many of our friends and neighbors come out to it.

After sleeping in the following morning (I’m not going to admit how late we slept) we began the work of prepping to go over once again.  Besides gathering dinner, jammies, blankets, and tractors every cowboy and cowgirl needs, I had a little extra work of getting together my pictures to enter into the fair.  Don’t worry, we made it amidst all of the craziness and all I forgot to do was my makeup, no biggie…  Besides entering my pictures the fair that night we took found a seat in stands for the free concert- Charley Jenkins!  He is an up and coming country singer from Utah.  His songs were so awesome- they were all about The Rancher, I swear!

We weren’t terribly interested in the sheep show so we chose to stay home Wednesday.  Oh how I loved it!  I even swept and mopped my floor!  Of course you would never guess it at this point.  Living with a little boy that plays in the dirt and a big boy that work (plays) in the dirt all day means that this house doesn’t stay clean.

Thursday was our big day.  Cowboys Pete and E had their steer show- a must see!  And to know surprise they did a great job showing.  When the cattle are all done they do an open showmanship class that I borrowed Cowboy Pete’s steer.  We totally took first place!  I’ll have to see if anyone took a picture for proof.  The night ended with the Family Fun Rodeo.  This isn’t a typical rodeo, in fact when The Rancher did his team roping he was minus a horse.  That is what we call the poor man roping.  I can guarantee that if they don’t catch right out of the chute that they won’t chase that calf down the arena.

Now I am sitting in sweats in my nicely air conditioned house, debating if it is nap time or lunch time.  I think that this day calls for relaxing because tomorrow is more craziness.  Oh how we love fair week!

A Cool Summer Night

August 10, 2013 by Allison

We love the long summer evenings because there is just so much fun stuff to do around the ranch and around our little valley.  A favorite is always saddling up the horses and heading to the arena.

One night The Rancher needed to practice roping with his partner for the upcoming rodeo (that has since come and gone… yep, I need to post them too… I know) so we made a family night of it.  With so many kids, horses, steers, and dogs, how could we NOT have a good time?!

There are so many reasons I love being a rancher’s wife and having so much to enjoy from our lifestyle.  You want to come visit now, don’t you?  Well come on over!

At Jacobsen’s Field

August 10, 2013 by Allison

These are more of the pictures from our trail down the road to Jacobsen’s field.  The cowboys waited there for a bit doctor the calves.  They also try to keep the cows gathered up long enough for them to get paired together.  At least we hope they will…

Did someone call for a Doctor?

August 6, 2013 by Allison

Having the cows on the range for the summer does bring its challenges.  If ever the calves get sick they still need to be doctored, regardless of whether we have the luxury of the corrals or chute.  Most often they get taken their medicine when the cows get gathered to move to the next field.  There was a handful of calves to be done as we moved them to Jacobson’s field.  Even though there are challenges, The Rancher doesn’t really complain.  Any chance he has to rope a calf he will take, no matter the circumstances!

The Art of a Cowboy

July 31, 2013 by Allison

Being a cowboy is so much more than just riding a horse and following the cows.  It may appear that it is all that they do but once you get to know them and watch what they do you realize that there is so much more to it.  Most of it is instinct.  Its like a sixth sense that they gain over time and through experience.  They are born with a certain ability to connect with the animals.  They learn to be fearless or need be to face their fears.  There are people that say that ranchers or cowboys are the uneducated ones that couldn’t make it in the world.  Maybe they couldn’t make it sitting behind a desk all day but that is because God gave them gifts that we can afford for them to waste.  You should come and try to do what they do.  What they do is an art.  There is no other way to explain it.

Gotta Hurry Home!

July 27, 2013 by Allison

The association cowboys gathered up the forest cows to move to the next of their summer pasture early Saturday morning.  It was a beautiful morning for a ride.

A bike ride that is.

I too headed out on the road, thinking that these cowboys were pushing the herd back across all of the fields instead of down the lovely paved highway that I had chosen to peddle my bike down.

As I just about to turn around I got a call from The Rancher.  He casually asked what I was doing and where I was.  I responded that I riding my bike down the road.  Why?  Well, they were heading down the road with the cows, were almost to the house and if I didn’t hurry I was going to get caught in the midst of them.

I should get a medal for how fast I turned that bike around and peddled back to the house.  Just as rolled into my driveway the first of the cows came across.  Phew… I made it.

And just in time for pictures too!

I quickly changed out of my stinky exercise clothes and into my stinky cowgirl clothes, loaded up The Rancher’s Sidekick and The Ranch Princess to follow the cow trail.  Its kinda hard to miss… they leave digested bread crumbs along the way.  Another good reason to not be riding down the road with the cows.

Putting up the Grain

July 25, 2013 by Allison

Remember this spring when I posted pictures of the newly sprouting grain?  Well it has sprouted, grown, been swathed, raked, and baled.  I was super lucky to get a few snaps before it all ended up in the stack yard.

There is something about men that when you say, “Tell me when you are going to ____ (fill the blank with whatever) let me know so that I can take some pictures.”  that it totally escapes them.  Cowboy Pete had just started swathing the last field when The Rancher called to say that if I wanted to get any picture it had to be NOW.  But I must admit, I am grateful that he called.  I really should give him a break because coming out to take pictures is a new thing this year.  And I know that when there is a job to get done the work must go on, even if the picture taker isn’t ready.

Sadly, I didn’t get any of the baling… Yep we missed that…  You will have to look forward to it next year.

Here is the grain, just sprouting.
And here it is again as it is being cut down.

This is a crazy photo but I was trying to show just how tall it had grown.  But several factors kept it from turning out how I would have liked.  And it was too tall to get all of it if I took the shot from the ground like a did for the springtime picture.

Cowboys Pete and E

July 22, 2013 by Allison

One fine day I found these cowboys down at the arena messing horsing around (ha ha ha! Ok, I know its not funny…).  They had loaded up the roping steers, put on the horn wraps, and rigged the shoot to open with some baling twine.  A few friends had come over so naturally the crew had made their way to the arena.

I was really supposed to something domestic like dusting, laundry, dinner…  But I didn’t want to so I meandered down there to take some pictures.

Now remember that I am not a photographer so these aren’t the best, but they do show what a fun time they had and what a good group of kids they are.

PS- if anyone out knows how to take a STELLAR picture of cowboys roping I would love to learn.  They are just so fast that I can’t keep them in focus…

Cowboy E decided that these were more than just roping steers.  Oh no, they are more like multi-purpose steers and that maybe he should bulldog one of them.  Sadly we don’t have a bull doggin’ horse so instead of bailing off the horse he grabs a hold of the steer as it is coming out of the chute.  That starts him with a disadvantage, don’t you think?  Regardless of who is winning he still looks like he is in control for this picture.  Do you think that he flipped the steer?  You will have to ask him!

Cowboy Pete tried for the steer wrestling too.  His turn didn’t end too swell…  But at least his faithful pup is there to console him.  (Just so you know, everything is OK- no serious injuries… we think)

The girls opted for using this multi-purpose steer for… I don’t know.. a trick steer?  a bucking steer?  I’m not really sure, but at least they are cute doing it!

So God Made a Farmer (or in this case a Rancher)

July 18, 2013 by Allison

How many of you watched the Superbowl this year?  Now, did you skip the game for the commercials or skip the commercials for the game?

I do both.  But I’m not here to talk write about football.

What I have been thinking about it this cool commercial that Dodge put out.  Do you remember it?  It is a quote by Paul Harvey talking about that God created the Farmer on the eighth day, for so many reasons.  But all in all its about that God needed a man that was hard working, that would make sacrifices, and be dedicated to the end.  He wanted someone that was tough and could take anything yet still tender and understanding.  It would be a man that would stand up for right in whatever circles he was in and be a proactive member of his community.

In the commercial it always says farmer but I like to slide in rancher too (and not often do I think that rancher and farmer are the same but this time I think we can get away with it).  And they got it right on!  This is what type of people ranchers and farmers are.  And there aren’t too many of the good men left.

I had to watch it again and after I did I thought you all should too.

What’s a Rancher Without His Cow Dog?

July 13, 2013 by Allison

Have you stopped to think about that question?  Any good rancher has at least one cow dog, but more like three or four.  And usually those dogs are good enough to move the cows without any help.  Well that might be over stating it, but we rarely work cows without The Rancher’s Dog.  Even when we are working them through the squeeze chute it is the dog’s responsibility to move the cows along.

Quick side story*
When we were in college The Rancher’s Dog took a spill out of the back of the truck and broke both of his back legs.  We weren’t sure what to do but when I looked at The Rancher I knew that we were NOT putting this dog down.  We began by splinting it but that didn’t keep the bones aligned well enough.  The options were to either do surgery and pin it or surgery and amputate it.  We opted for the pin.  He seems to do well.  Occaisonally we see a little limp and I’m afraid he will end up with arthritis but I don’t think we really could have seen that dog go.  That day was the nearest I have ever seen The Rancher cry.

But on a happier note, he is alive with all of his legs and is a master cow chaser.  When we were moving cows to Badger Hole the heifers were really on the fight.  I didn’t get a great picture of the dogs getting the cows but some other fun ones.

That puts even my teenage son smelling dinner on the stove to shame 🤣

But that’s just fine. These bulls have a lot of work to covering a herd it in the range. Three months of hard work before they go back to the life of luxury.

Here’s a little breeding trivia (I post the answers in the comments later tonight):
How far can a bull smell a cow in heat?
How long is a cow in heat?
What is the average number of cows a bull will cover in a breeding season?

😂 The contrasting combo in this frozen moment alwa 😂 The contrasting combo in this frozen moment always makes me laugh!

Spurs, chaps, and cowboy hat all perched atop a Honda dirt bike. The Rancher temporarily traded in his horse for his two wheeler counter part to help get the job done and the cows in to brand.

Sure, we love to do everything we can on horses, but there are sometimes it’s just far more practical to turn on the key to the 4 wheeler or dirt bike. It’s not as romantic or punchy, but I have to admit there are times it is the better way to get the job done.

That kind of admission might have just lost me some cred (if I had any to begin with at all! 😂) but it’s true. We use all the best resources we have at hand even if that means cowboy meets dirt bike!

Cows are funny. They are ready to plow you over Cows are funny.

They are ready to plow you over one second for messing with their calf, and then 2 minutes later completely forget they even have one when they see a patch of green grass.

Did you know they only recognize their calves by their smell? Of course they don’t go by tag number, but I’m not even sure they can recognize markings or color.

Which means these lovely windy days this spring has provided can make pairing up cattle a little tricky.

If only a cow could read…

Growing up I knew I always wanted to be a mom, to Growing up I knew I always wanted to be a mom, to raise a family like I had. I had visions of working together on the ranch and quiet nights watching the sunset together. Ya know, the perfect ranch family.

But as life goes, it certainly hasn’t been that easy.

In fact there were parts of motherhood that I absolutely struggled with. It wasn’t the late nights or all the diaper changes. I could handle messes and the tantrums.

The hardest part for me was that I felt… stuck.

I loved the nap time snuggles, the chubby hands in mine, and the shadow that followed everywhere I went. But still I felt untapped, like I needed to be doing more, contributing to life in a meaningful way.

I told myself “this IS meaningful work!” and “seasons change.” But there were so many hard days.

Time went on, kids grew and our seasons changed. And motherhood has never been so meaningful and fulfilling as it is now.

I love watching my kids struggle and then succeed. I love talking through the good days of school and love when they need a hug after the bad. Teaching and walking them through first experiences brings me pride and joy I can’t explain.

All those hard days were worth it.

I don’t know if motherhood was meant to be enjoyed everyday or in every season. But I can tell you the hard days of being a mom have made the good days that much sweeter and that much more fulfilling.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. I hope you are finding joy and fulfillment in every season of motherhood. But if you aren’t right now, I promise it will come.

When you see a handsome cowboy in a pair of chaps, When you see a handsome cowboy in a pair of chaps, did you ever wonder why he’s wearing them? Yes, because they look dang cool but there’s a few other reasons.

Here’s why I throw on mine:
1. Chaps help keep me warm on those cool days. That extra layer is just enough to keep the chill from getting to me.

2. Leather chaps are (mostly) waterproof and help the rain off. Of course, if there’s a ton of rain it will seep through but, let’s be honest, I’d be happy for the problem.

3. When you kneel in the dirt over and over, maybe even in a little poop or blood, chaps help keep you jeans a little cleaner.

4. Chaps keep my pants from a little less wear and tear, especially when I’m ripping. The first place my jeans wear out of I don’t wear chaps is in the place my rope slides across my leg.

And, yes, I do think they look cool and I really want to look like a REAL cowgirl so chaps are a bit of a fashion statement 😉🤣.

Chinks, wooleys, shotgun chaps… ALL the kind of chaps 🥰

It’s my birthday today… so indulge me a moment. It’s my birthday today… so indulge me a moment.

I LOVE my birthday! Not in a get-me-lots-of-gifts-and-make-it-all-about me kind of way. I just love celebrating another year of living.

Over the last year I have made so many memories. I have made new connections and enriched old ones. There have been hard learned lessons I never want to go through again but wouldn’t trade them for anything. I love being a wife and mom but also being a coach, a leader, and a rancher. I love having pretty nails but also building strong muscles.

I love all of this life I get to live!

And I hope you do too.

From one hopeful, happy, struggling, anxiety ridden cowgirl to another and everyone else out there- work every day to build a life that is meaningful to you. And then celebrate it!

PS- no need for birthday wishes here, I’m not here looking for them, just sharing my heart.
“I just want to make my mark.” (Please tell me you “I just want to make my mark.” (Please tell me you are “How to Train Your Dragon” fans with us!)

And depending on how the day goes…
we either do just that…

or make a few marks in all the wrong places.

The delicacy of branding day that no one partakes in, usually.

There’s always a few castrated bits grilling on the top of the branding box and, I’ll admit that they smell delicious. In order to feel like a true cowgirl, I once indulged and it wasn’t bad. But I just can’t really wrap my brain around eating more than just a taste.

I’ve loved ranching for as long as I can remember— I’ve loved ranching for as long as I can remember—though marrying my husband proved I still had a lot to learn about their way of doing things.

It’s been about 10 years since I got serious about roping, and only in the last 5 that it’s really started to click. And now I’m hooked!

Still learning, still improving—but fair warning: if I don’t get to rope, I will absolutely be in a mood about it… but I’ll do my best to keep it to myself.

Did you know we have been running cattle on this r Did you know we have been running cattle on this range for over 100 years? Even before these public lands were claimed as BLM, my husband’s great-great-grandpa raised cattle through these same hills. In fact, this large herd of cows still carries some of those same genetics. Of course there have changes through the years, but we try to do the same they did five generations ago- raise great cattle.

Rancher’s wife tip- consult calendar dates for any Rancher’s wife tip- consult calendar dates for any and ALL possible events, including your child’s birth day.

On this day 16 years ago, my husband left our little college-town home to drive the 3 hours down to the family desert piece to brand. I instead went to my OB appointment where I was told to go directly to the hospital to deliver my baby.

Nothing scary or concerning- both baby and I were perfectly healthy. But of course it had to happen on branding day. I heard the sorted calves loud and clear in the background. And if I remember right, there was a small hesitation where I’m sure he considered staying to brand the first set of calves before coming to the hospital.

Moral of the story- don’t have babies in branding season. It’s best to consult his calendar. On the other hand, birthing little cowboys into such chaos might be the key to them growing into strong, kind, and capable young men.

“Hello, Ladies,” said in a low, sultry voice. The “Hello, Ladies,” said in a low, sultry voice. The most subtle pick up line from the Old Spice commercials, of all places.

We may be in the middle of dropping this years’ calves but that doesn’t mean we aren’t prepping for next year already.

Bull turnout will be here before we know out which means we need to have enough herd bulls heathy, strong, and range ready to breed cows all summer long.

For months we have been testing, doctoring, and buying bulls ready. With the last of them being delivered any day now, we will get everything branded, tagged and ready for their final inspection.

There’s still a little time before turnout, but everything is lining up. Bulls getting ready, cows getting close…
And somewhere in the back of your mind, you can already hear it—
“Hello, ladies.”
