Twitterpated Part I: CIDRs

June 5, 2013 by Allison

On our ranch we really run on Mother Nature’s clock.  What I mean is that we grow in the summer (crops and calves), migrate at the end of fall (take our cows to Locomotive), and have babies in the spring.  (I would love to hibernate for the winter (what a long nap!) but I don’t think that would work so well…)  According to Mother Nature (and Bambi) springtime also means that all the animals, including our cows are twitterpated.

Every May you can count on two things AI-ing and turning the bulls out.  This is definitely not a one day thing, in fact what we do is done over a series of weeks and the bulls are left out with the cows most of the summer.  So we will break it up into the different parts too!

With our first time heifers we AI (artificially inseminate) them.  We want to make sure that they have the best chance of getting bred up well.  We also want a little more control of what bull breeds them.  When we chose our semen we are able to find bulls that are known to have smaller calves which will be easier for these first time mommas.

In preparation to AI them we first synchronize the heifers so that they will all come into heat at the same time.  This makes it easier for The Rancher because then they can all be bred on the same day.  We use CIDRs, controlled internal drug releasing devices, which will release hormones to begin them cycling as well as prevent any heifers that may already be in heat from getting bred.

This is sounding way too much like a research paper…  In The Rancher’s Wife’s terms the poor girls get all sorts of hormones and birth control to make sure we know when it is… TIME.

Date Night

June 4, 2013 by Allison

When you live in the middle of no where you get to be creative when it comes to date night.  We have had date nights where we go riding (horses) or for a drive (in the truck or playing Mariokart) or just some playing card games at the kitchen table.  We have even had our own “comedy” night by youtube-ing our favorites and reading laffy taffy jokes.  Like I said, we get creative.

But during the school year the sports can provide some fun entertainment.  This time of year that is High School Rodeo.  It may not be your top-stock-top-cowboy sort of rodeo but it still is a fun time to be together and to support the local cowboys/girls (like The Rancher’s brothers!)

For the record, this cowboy is not one of The Rancher’s brothers, its just one of the better pictures of the night. : )

But this sure is!  (a picture of a brother, but not a good picture…)

Moving to Spring Pasture

June 3, 2013 by Allison

Ok friends…  I was looking through pictures and realized that there were some fun things that you have totally missed out on (my bad!).  Since I totally owe you after my long hiatus I am going to back track a bit.  I think we will all be ok with that, right?

The heifer cows were moved up to their spring pasture a few miles east of the ranch.  It really was a perfect little afternoon.  The spot that we took them to was quite beautiful (you can disagree… I used to…).  It was so green- even the sage brush is green this year!  The cows moved well and as always The Rancher was one good looking cowboy.

The only thing that would have made this absolutely perfect was if I would have taken the camera.  Ya, Ooops!  I figured I didn’t need to this time but I was so wrong.  In attempts to still capture the day I headed up at sundown to try and snap a few pictures.  I’ll admit they don’t do it justice but at least they serve as a reminder to NOT leave the camera at home.

On Vacation

May 31, 2013 by Allison

A rancher is always busy… ALWAYS.  Its one of those unspoken rules that a rancher wife just gets to deal with.  There are two ways to approach it.  Either you go solo and leave the rancher behind to his chores or you chose to help out with the chores and never leave the ranch (which is what this rancher’s wife usually prefers to do).  That is for about 95% of the time.  But occasionally the rancher will admit that he needs some time off of the ranch so then we quick load up the posse and head out!.

So that’s what we did!  We headed to Las Vegas!

I know its the wrong time of year for a cowboy family to head that direction but there are more things than the NFR to draw us to LV.  This time my dear friend was giving her mission farewell.  She has chosen to serve as a missionary for our church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  We decided that we would go support her, spend some time before she leaves for 18 months and make a whole family vacation out of it!

And that, my dear readers, is why the ranch front has been quiet- we were gone!  But I promise to make it up to you because as I said earlier, a rancher is ALWAYS busy!

Cow Dog or Coon Dog?

May 21, 2013 by Allison

The Rancher has a one-in-a-million kind a of dog.  He is a darn good cow dog that has a few other skills.  Like one day moving cows I look over to see him jump onto The Rancher’s horse and take a ride.  Another time I saw him riding on the motorcycle with The Rancher, hanging onto the front bars.  This silly dog is the best at loading up into the pickup, even when its date night (what an exciting third wheel!).  After Sunday we can add another skill- he can tree a raccoon!

Yes you read it right…  I’m not sure if we have a cow dog or a coon dog on our hands but look at his handy work!

Some Time Inside for The Rancher’s Wife

May 17, 2013 by Allison

Being a rancher’s wife calls for more things than being out on the ranch.  Sometimes it requires days spent in the house.  There are the typical cleaning, laundry and cooking that The Rancher always needs done but this is how I spent my morning…

Can you guess what I did?  Here’s a better look…

Yes, those are The Rancher’s pants on the sewing machine (and The Rancher’s Girl keeping me company in the back šŸ™‚ ).   I had been putting it off for a LONG time (some of them have needed to be mended for over a year!) and I got away with it because there was always another pair of jeans that didn’t have any holes… until there wasn’t .  I finally gave into The Rancher’s request after doing a load of laundry and I realized that EVERY pair had holes… So I sat down with the sewing machine and a movie (because I knew it was going to take a while) and got to work.  In the end I mended 7 pairs of jeans and threw out 3 because they had too many darn holes.  And now maybe I can go another year before I have to mend his jeans again!  What do ya think?

Spring Has Sprung

May 15, 2013 by Allison

Last year it seemed that Ms. Winter hung on forever.  And when it finally let got Ms. Summer jumped right in and we didn’t have too many days to spend with Ms. Spring.  This year we have!  We have had those perfect cool and crisp mornings that warm up just enough to not worry about getting too hot (or sunburned!)  We didn’t have too many April showers but enough that we are green.  The Rancher spent some busy days doing his spring farm work planting grain and alfalfa (correction, I was just reminded that we haven’t put in the alfalfa yet… but will soon).  The sprinklers are rolled out and turned on.  We have the new spring chicks and the plum tree is beginning to get its leaves.  Yes boys and girls, this year spring is in full swing.

The Rancher’s Sister

May 15, 2013 by Allison

It’s probably not too hard to imagine that I am a rancher’s sister (and a rancher’s daughter, just to throw that out there).  I grew up on a ranch and ALWAYS loved that lifestyle, so much that I always told my dad that I would marry a cowboy (doesn’t that sound so romantic?!).  To clarify, that meant a rancher cowboy not a rodeo cowboy, although I found both in The Rancher.
Ok, side note over…  I went to visit my brother, let’s call him The Lemhi Rancher (yep, you guessed it, he lives in Lemhi!).  We were having a family gathering so the kids and I loaded up the covered wagon (aka the Tahoe), kissed The Rancher goodbye and hit the road.  The Rancher had to sit this one out because they turning the cows out onto the spring range.  Can I get a woot (that the cows are out, not that I went without The Rancher)?
Even though we live on our own ranch and see the horses, cows, 4-wheelers, and ect. daily we always have such a great time at The Lemhi Ranchers ranch.  And he does have one thing that we don’t have… BUFFALO.
About 4 years ago the owner decided that he wanted to add buffalo to the ranch.  Nope, they didn’t get rid of the cows…  Now they have a cattle cow-calf operation and a buffalo cow-calf operation.  As soon as The Lemhi Rancher gets done calving out the cows it is about time to calve out the buffalo.  The nature of the buffalo (can you say wild?!) changes how they do it all, in fact calving is so hands off that all they can really do is keep a good watch and monitor what’s happening.
We always like to spin through the buffalo.  This trip was a little different since they are in the middle of calving so there were tons of new babies jumping around.  Most days I will tell you that I find the buffalo to be ugly but there are times that they a sort of rugged beauty and their power is quite awe-inspiring.
And in the barn they had a special treat for us- a baby buffalo!  We walked out one night and helped The Lemhi Rancher feed the little guy.

So even though this isn’t something happening on our ranch, it’s still fun to share some other ranching fun!

A Refreshing Rain

May 9, 2013 by Allison

Our little valley, like most of the area, is really suffering for rain.  We are just bone dry due to such little snow for winter 2011/2012 and only a few inches of rain last summer.  This last winter we were blessed with the snow we needed but if we don’t continue to get water we will be in trouble again.  The Rancher watches the weather man every night to see if the rain will come.  Every night he prays so earnestly that we will have some moisture.

A look at the clouds coming in from my front porch

And I think that he has bombarded heaven enough that little by little we are getting some moisture.  In fact you can see that the fields are turning green and the rain clouds are rolling in.  Its amazing, I never thought I would love rain as much as I do being a rancher’s wife.  I do admit that I do have some selfish reasons for wanting rain- maybe if it rains enough, The Rancher will slow down for a day that I can see him!

Checking Water

May 6, 2013 by Allison

Something you really should grasp about Locomotive is that it is a wide open desert range.  In fact, lets consult the thesaurus to really get a feel for it…  DESERT: desolate – deserted – empty – wild – barren – dull.  Yes I think that sums it all up!  Actually I am afraid to admit it into the blogosphere (because once anything is on the internet it is there forever!) but it does have a unique beauty that has really, REALLY, really grown on me.  That doesn’t mean I love it, but the emptiness is somewhat peaceful.

Ok, I got way off track… It is desert which means that there is NO water unless you make it happen, by either hauling water or digging a well.  With the number of cows and the thousands of acres they went with the latter.  This also means that it needs to be checked often to be sure that there are no malfunction because no water= bad news.  If The Rancher doesn’t have plans to stay to Locomotive all day we will ride out there with him. The actual checking of the water isn’t that interesting, but it is always fun to go for a ride and look for a good picture.

Idaho ranch wife + mama 🐮🤠
Living on cattle, cocoa & kids running wild.
Daily ranch life, western style all with a side of dirt.

Cows are funny. They are ready to plow you over Cows are funny.

They are ready to plow you over one second for messing with their calf, and then 2 minutes later completely forget they even have one when they see a patch of green grass.

Did you know they only recognize their calves by their smell? Of course they don’t go by tag number, but I’m not even sure they can recognize markings or color.

Which means these lovely windy days this spring has provided can make pairing up cattle a little tricky.

If only a cow could read…

Growing up I knew I always wanted to be a mom, to Growing up I knew I always wanted to be a mom, to raise a family like I had. I had visions of working together on the ranch and quiet nights watching the sunset together. Ya know, the perfect ranch family.

But as life goes, it certainly hasn’t been that easy.

In fact there were parts of motherhood that I absolutely struggled with. It wasn’t the late nights or all the diaper changes. I could handle messes and the tantrums.

The hardest part for me was that I felt… stuck.

I loved the nap time snuggles, the chubby hands in mine, and the shadow that followed everywhere I went. But still I felt untapped, like I needed to be doing more, contributing to life in a meaningful way.

I told myself ā€œthis IS meaningful work!ā€ and ā€œseasons change.ā€ But there were so many hard days.

Time went on, kids grew and our seasons changed. And motherhood has never been so meaningful and fulfilling as it is now.

I love watching my kids struggle and then succeed. I love talking through the good days of school and love when they need a hug after the bad. Teaching and walking them through first experiences brings me pride and joy I can’t explain.

All those hard days were worth it.

I don’t know if motherhood was meant to be enjoyed everyday or in every season. But I can tell you the hard days of being a mom have made the good days that much sweeter and that much more fulfilling.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. I hope you are finding joy and fulfillment in every season of motherhood. But if you aren’t right now, I promise it will come.

When you see a handsome cowboy in a pair of chaps, When you see a handsome cowboy in a pair of chaps, did you ever wonder why he’s wearing them? Yes, because they look dang cool but there’s a few other reasons.

Here’s why I throw on mine:
1. Chaps help keep me warm on those cool days. That extra layer is just enough to keep the chill from getting to me.

2. Leather chaps are (mostly) waterproof and help the rain off. Of course, if there’s a ton of rain it will seep through but, let’s be honest, I’d be happy for the problem.

3. When you kneel in the dirt over and over, maybe even in a little poop or blood, chaps help keep you jeans a little cleaner.

4. Chaps keep my pants from a little less wear and tear, especially when I’m ripping. The first place my jeans wear out of I don’t wear chaps is in the place my rope slides across my leg.

And, yes, I do think they look cool and I really want to look like a REAL cowgirl so chaps are a bit of a fashion statement šŸ˜‰šŸ¤£.

Chinks, wooleys, shotgun chaps… ALL the kind of chaps 🄰

It’s my birthday today… so indulge me a moment. It’s my birthday today… so indulge me a moment.

I LOVE my birthday! Not in a get-me-lots-of-gifts-and-make-it-all-about me kind of way. I just love celebrating another year of living.

Over the last year I have made so many memories. I have made new connections and enriched old ones. There have been hard learned lessons I never want to go through again but wouldn’t trade them for anything. I love being a wife and mom but also being a coach, a leader, and a rancher. I love having pretty nails but also building strong muscles.

I love all of this life I get to live!

And I hope you do too.

From one hopeful, happy, struggling, anxiety ridden cowgirl to another and everyone else out there- work every day to build a life that is meaningful to you. And then celebrate it!

PS- no need for birthday wishes here, I’m not here looking for them, just sharing my heart.
ā€œI just want to make my mark.ā€ (Please tell me you ā€œI just want to make my mark.ā€ (Please tell me you are ā€œHow to Train Your Dragonā€ fans with us!)

And depending on how the day goes…
we either do just that…

or make a few marks in all the wrong places.

There are no tryouts. No cuts. But you better believe there are expectations.

They’re not measured in stats or accomplishments. More like attitude, work ethic, and whether you show up when it matters.

Our team has kids and experience alike.
It has energy and wisdom.

Rocky Mountain Oysters… The delicacy of branding Rocky Mountain Oysters…

The delicacy of branding day that no one partakes in, usually.

There’s always a few castrated bits grilling on the top of the branding box and, I’ll admit that they smell delicious. In order to feel like a true cowgirl, I once indulged and it wasn’t bad. But I just can’t really wrap my brain around eating more than just a taste.

If there is one thing you can guarantee out here on the range is plenty of dust. We keep praying for rain and have had little bits here and there, but not really much to amount to.

I’ve loved ranching for as long as I can remember— I’ve loved ranching for as long as I can remember—though marrying my husband proved I still had a lot to learn about their way of doing things.

It’s been about 10 years since I got serious about roping, and only in the last 5 that it’s really started to click. And now I’m hooked!

Still learning, still improving—but fair warning: if I don’t get to rope, I will absolutely be in a mood about it… but I’ll do my best to keep it to myself.

Did you know we have been running cattle on this r Did you know we have been running cattle on this range for over 100 years? Even before these public lands were claimed as BLM, my husband’s great-great-grandpa raised cattle through these same hills. In fact, this large herd of cows still carries some of those same genetics. Of course there have changes through the years, but we try to do the same they did five generations ago- raise great cattle.

Rancher’s wife tip- consult calendar dates for any Rancher’s wife tip- consult calendar dates for any and ALL possible events, including your child’s birth day.

On this day 16 years ago, my husband left our little college-town home to drive the 3 hours down to the family desert piece to brand. I instead went to my OB appointment where I was told to go directly to the hospital to deliver my baby.

Nothing scary or concerning- both baby and I were perfectly healthy. But of course it had to happen on branding day. I heard the sorted calves loud and clear in the background. And if I remember right, there was a small hesitation where I’m sure he considered staying to brand the first set of calves before coming to the hospital.

Moral of the story- don’t have babies in branding season. It’s best to consult his calendar. On the other hand, birthing little cowboys into such chaos might be the key to them growing into strong, kind, and capable young men.

Tell me I’m not the only one who has to plan life around ranch work

ā€œHello, Ladies,ā€ said in a low, sultry voice. The ā€œHello, Ladies,ā€ said in a low, sultry voice. The most subtle pick up line from the Old Spice commercials, of all places.

We may be in the middle of dropping this years’ calves but that doesn’t mean we aren’t prepping for next year already.

Bull turnout will be here before we know out which means we need to have enough herd bulls heathy, strong, and range ready to breed cows all summer long.

For months we have been testing, doctoring, and buying bulls ready. With the last of them being delivered any day now, we will get everything branded, tagged and ready for their final inspection.

There’s still a little time before turnout, but everything is lining up. Bulls getting ready, cows getting close…
And somewhere in the back of your mind, you can already hear it—

You ever feel like you’re being watched while you You ever feel like you’re being watched while you work… ?šŸ˜…
We had a full panel of judges today, watching every move we made, and I’m sure they were thinking things like ā€œwe’re watching you,ā€ ā€œwhy are you doing thatā€ and ā€œdon’t mess this up!ā€

And honestly… they’re not wrong.

Because whether it’s giving a calf the little extra boost it needs, or raising a boy to step in, work hard, and figure things out—this stuff matters. It’s not always smooth, and we don’t always get it perfect, but it’s worth getting right.

The herd might have a lot more eyes on me, but it’s the eyes from my husband, my kids and the others that are counting on me. Good thing for a lot of love and grace!

Today I’m pretty sure we passed inspection, though. Jury’s still out. šŸ„šŸ‘€

Dear Mother Nature, I’ve been skeptical of the we Dear Mother Nature,
I’ve been skeptical of the weather and your intentions for months now. Could life really be this sunny and warm? šŸ„°šŸ¤”

But now that the calendar has actually flipped to spring, I’m feeling more confident and hopeful that this is here to last. 🄹

Now, that doesn’t mean you should drop snow on us just because I’m relaxing into it, although that still would be part of an Idaho spring. 🤪🤣

We could use a touch rain. The moisture we have had has done so much good but it won’t last long. šŸ™šŸ»

As ranchers we put a lot of faith and trust in you to take care of us. Don’t let us down. Not there’s a lot we can do in revenge or anything šŸ«©šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’ØšŸ¤£.

Please tell me not the only one… I’m starting to Please tell me not the only one…

I’m starting to realize I live in a constant state of being in the wrong place… while also being exactly where I’m supposed to be.

At a basketball game? Thinking about what’s happening on the ranch.
Out on the ranch? Thinking about the laundry, the schedule, or where I’m supposed to be next.

Turns out nothing on a ranch waits for you. Not the cows, not the weather, not the work.

And unfortunately, the rest of life doesn’t either.

I used to think if I just planned things better, I could keep up with all of it.

Now I’m realizing that was wildly… optimistic. 🤣🤪

So these days I just do my best to show up where I am, try not to think too hard about what I’m missing somewhere else, and trust it’ll all still be there when I get back.

(Some days I’m better at that than others.)

Give me an AMEN IF you’ve ever felt like you’re supposed to be in two places at once
