The Crew Part 2

January 3, 2014 by Allison

(He, he… the title  rhymes!)

Do you want to know what was so cool about our family cattle drive last week?  Well, yes the winter temperatures did make it a “cool” outing.  What else made it especially cool was that we had all of The Rancher’s brothers.

There are five- that’s a lot of cowboys for one momma to handle.  Thankfully she is still alive and sane.

We are always privileged to work with Cowboy Pete and Cowboy E while they still live on the ranch, and once again they graced us with their cowboy presence.

With it being Christmas brother #2 and his sweet wife were around to move cows with us.  Wouldn’t it be fun to call them Bonnie and Clyde?  Except that they are good kids so the name doesn’t fit.  So instead lets call them The Cowpoke and The Montana Girl.  Right now they are absent Eliason cowboys because they are becoming educated cow-folk.

And completing the cowboy brotherhood was brother #3.  Last week we welcomed home The Buckaroo from his church mission to Kansas.  In true cowboy fashion he was moving cows the day after he got home!

So already this is fun to move cows with all the brothers but something else cool was that there were four generations of cowboys out there from The Ranch Boss to The Rancher’s Sidekick.  Its not too often that four generations get to work together!

The Crew

January 1, 2014 by Allison

Most of the time when we move cows we are with our neighbors and other ranchers.  But now that our cows are alone we get to do it just us.  Just the family.  And what is even better is that we love to do it as a family.

Every family has their own thing that they like to do. We like playing games and working together.

From the Feed Truck

December 31, 2013 by Allison

I’d like to think I’m a tough girl.  I mean, I have had babies.  A mother by definition is tough, right?

Maybe I should admit that I do have a damsel-in-distress side that does counter my tough-cowgirl side, but as tough as I am, its ok that on the cold morning cattle drive I was invited to stay in the warm feed truck.  We used the feed truck to lure the cows home.  And it worked.  It worked GREAT.

It took only a matter of minutes for all of the cows to come running up the hill.  Every once in a while they did slow down.  But all The Rancher needed to do to get them moving again was to pretend to drop the hay.

I thought I would get a little creative and take some pictures of the cows in the rear view mirror.  Ya, that only works of the mirror is clean.  I guess that my picture is proof that we are in a REAL ranch truck.

Moving Cows on a Cool, Clear Morning

December 30, 2013 by Allison

The cowboys decided that it was time to move the cows to the ranch now that winter is upon us.  All though there isn’t a lot of snow, there is enough now that we have to feed every day.  This means that The Rancher would have to take the hay to the cows each day or bring the cows home.  Of course, they chose the latter.

So on a beautiful, clear morning we trailed the cows home.  I really shouldn’t include myself in the “trailing” part of the move because we were at the head of the herd in the feed truck, coaxing them to come along.  For once I have pictures at the front end of these cows!

Merry Christmas from The Rancher’s Wife

December 24, 2013 by Allison

It is Christmas Eve today and all of the holiday celebrations are building to make a special Christmas morning.  The Rancher’s Sidekick is really gearing up for Santa to come and The Rancher Princess is totally into the wrapping paper, so regardless of how prepared I am it is here.

We have enjoyed the lights and the glitz and all of the fun that comes with the season, but tonight we are going to change our focus.  Tonight we want to take a few moments to talk about the significance of that day so long ago.  A small baby was born, whose life completely changed the world.

Ranch Winter Scenes

December 24, 2013 by Allison

I love winter.  Pretty much everything about.  The colder temperatures are so nice after a hot summer.

Winter time is calving time and there is something special about new babies.

I even love myself a little blizzard once in a while.  I’m a hopeless romantic- the idea of being snugged up by the warm fire during a blizzard sounds so lovely.  (Don’t let The Rancher read this… I might get in trouble by saying this out loud…)

But I especially love looking out over the ranch and seeing it covered in blanket of snow.  Or the trees that are frosted and twinkling in the sunlight.  Mmm…  I love me some winter scenes.

Helpers of all Sizes, Especially Little Helpers

December 19, 2013 by Allison

Working on the ranch is a family affair.  Partly because we all love to be out there but also because we need all the man (and woman)-power we can get.  That usually means we get kid-power too because wherever I go, the kids go.  So when we vaccinated the calves, The Rancher’s Sidekick came too.

This little boy loves to be on the ranch and already can be a great helper.  He even has his own paddle to poke the calves through the chute.  And he can “hup” with the best of them.  His size is never a factor- he just finds a way to climb up or reach whatever he needs.

But sometime he needs a break.  So we pull out his tractors and cars and plays on his own ranch.  Life is never dull for a little boy living on a ranch…

… even though it can be very cold for little cowboys!

The Day we BANGs Vaccinated the Calves

December 18, 2013 by Allison

The temperatures have been pretty low lately.  Like one day it was -18 at 10:00 am.  Yuck!  Of course that would be the day that The Rancher had to bring in a few stragglers from Black Pine.  And move the cows to new pasture.  And bring the heifers to the ranch to be vaccinated.  I would say that he came in with cold cheeks but for once that silly beard of his might be worth having (can you tell I’m not a fan?).

And of course the next coldest day was when we BANGs vaccinated the calves.  I’ll admit that on those cold days I’m a lot more willing to stay home to do the dishes and laundry, but sometimes I just gotta pull on my big girl boots and get to work.

You might be wondering why we just didn’t wait to do it until a warmer day.  Ya that’s what I thought too.  The Rancher told me that besides the fact that we would have to wait until spring if we used that logic, we had already scheduled the vet to be out here.

Most vaccines we just do ourselves, but the BANGs vaccination is state  regulated and can only be administered by a vet.  Brucellosis, the disease this vaccinations prevents, causes abortions in cows.  The bacteria remains in the after birth, which can infect other animals or even humans if they come in contact with it.  The bacteria also remains in the reproductive tract and can spread through a herd easily if a bull contracts and the breeds other cows.  Its pretty serious stuff, hence all the regulations.  As part of those regulations all heifers are required to get the vaccine from a vet.

To mark that these heifers have been BANGs vaccinated, they are given a special ear clip and a tattoo by the vet.  Remember when I was saying it was cold?  It was so cold that the tattoo ink was freezing on the brush.  It took a little spit to keep it spreadable..

Look at the steam coming off the calves!  Its stinking cold!

The Fruits of Our Christmas Tree Hunt

December 15, 2013 by Allison

Every hunt has its tale, which I have already shared as I began Norma’s Story.  But what I didn’t share are the photos from our tree hunt.  Pictures of The Rancher’s Sidekick and his grandpa cutting down a tree together (same tree, just 3 feet apart, and one using a saw and the other a small branch…) are just too fun not to share!

This year we had an extra treat.  When we began to load up in the trucks, a herd (hazards of being The Rancher’s Wife- everything comes in herds…) of turkeys came gobbling through.  The Rancher’s Sidekick jumped at the chance to feed them.

Norma’s Story: The Prologue

December 15, 2013 by Allison

The Holidays are filled with traditions, especially family traditions.  It’s those little things that make the season more than a generic celebration, but rather a time to cherish.

Nearly 10 years ago my parents began a tradition that, at the time, didn’t seem to be much more than what it appeared to be on the surface. But over time it has become one of those special things we love and cherish.  Without it, our Christmas season isn’t quite the same.

Ours is a Black Friday tradition, but not like you might imagine.  We do come home exhausted from our hunt, but not a hunt for gifts… but for Christmas trees!

Ya, it’s not wild crazy tradition.  In fact, lots of families do it.  For the most part it would be an ordinary go-get-your-tree adventure.  We gear up in our snow clothes (which get shed halfway up the mountain because we are so stinking hot from the hike) and search for that perfect tree.  In our circumstance, we look for 7 Christmas trees, or  close to that number.  One for us, one for mom and dad, one for this brother and that brother…  one for The Rancher’s Sidekick’s room even.  In fact these trees end up all over the country, shipped in mineral feed sacks making the trip quite nice.

So you get the idea… we get Christmas trees, one for everybody and their cowdog.

What makes this so special is who we get our trees from.

We find our trees from Norma… Sweet Norma.  At first we started to go to her mountain ranch because she has such beautiful trees, but now we go to be with her.  Sweet Norma is one of those women that just eeks love.

Our adventure with Sweet Norma is predictable and generally goes something like this.  We get out of the truck ready to be on the receiving end of the tightest, most loving hug, followed a good look up and down to see how we are.  After the hugs go around we load back into the trucks and she directs us to the best spot to find that special tree.  Once there she starts the trek up the mountainside, leading the way but slowly makes her way to the back to ensure that everyone is doing fine and visiting all along the way.

Oh, by the way, did I mention that she is in her mid-eighties?

Can you believe that this woman, that has every right to just point to the mountain and say, “Have at it,” walks us around as we indecisively choose our trees, never thinking of herself.  Instead of being frustrated with us taking up her day or wasting her energies to show us around her ranch, she is tickled to spend even the smallest minute with us.

So we choose our trees, snap a picture or two for momma’s sake, and we make our way back to the ranch yard.  Now that you are beginning to understand Sweet Norma you might guess that she won’t just let us drop her off and leave.  Your right. She won’t let us leave without first coming in for a hot cup of hot cocoa.  We’ll sip our drinks and visit for a bit until we need to hit the road. Sweet Norma walks us out and giving us all a tight, parting hug and kiss.

As far as the eye can see we leave with just a load of Christmas trees, but we leave with so much more than that.  Sweet Norma fills our souls with humble, unbiased country love.

There’s a lot we can learn from a woman like her.  This is the beginning of Norma’s Story.

Living on cattle, cocoa & kids running wild.
Daily ranch life, western style all with a side of dirt.

Cows are funny. They are ready to plow you over Cows are funny.

They are ready to plow you over one second for messing with their calf, and then 2 minutes later completely forget they even have one when they see a patch of green grass.

Did you know they only recognize their calves by their smell? Of course they don’t go by tag number, but I’m not even sure they can recognize markings or color.

Which means these lovely windy days this spring has provided can make pairing up cattle a little tricky.

Growing up I knew I always wanted to be a mom, to Growing up I knew I always wanted to be a mom, to raise a family like I had. I had visions of working together on the ranch and quiet nights watching the sunset together. Ya know, the perfect ranch family.

But as life goes, it certainly hasn’t been that easy.

In fact there were parts of motherhood that I absolutely struggled with. It wasn’t the late nights or all the diaper changes. I could handle messes and the tantrums.

The hardest part for me was that I felt… stuck.

I loved the nap time snuggles, the chubby hands in mine, and the shadow that followed everywhere I went. But still I felt untapped, like I needed to be doing more, contributing to life in a meaningful way.

I told myself ā€œthis IS meaningful work!ā€ and ā€œseasons change.ā€ But there were so many hard days.

Time went on, kids grew and our seasons changed. And motherhood has never been so meaningful and fulfilling as it is now.

I love watching my kids struggle and then succeed. I love talking through the good days of school and love when they need a hug after the bad. Teaching and walking them through first experiences brings me pride and joy I can’t explain.

All those hard days were worth it.

I don’t know if motherhood was meant to be enjoyed everyday or in every season. But I can tell you the hard days of being a mom have made the good days that much sweeter and that much more fulfilling.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. I hope you are finding joy and fulfillment in every season of motherhood. But if you aren’t right now, I promise it will come.

When you see a handsome cowboy in a pair of chaps, When you see a handsome cowboy in a pair of chaps, did you ever wonder why he’s wearing them? Yes, because they look dang cool but there’s a few other reasons.

Here’s why I throw on mine:
1. Chaps help keep me warm on those cool days. That extra layer is just enough to keep the chill from getting to me.

2. Leather chaps are (mostly) waterproof and help the rain off. Of course, if there’s a ton of rain it will seep through but, let’s be honest, I’d be happy for the problem.

3. When you kneel in the dirt over and over, maybe even in a little poop or blood, chaps help keep you jeans a little cleaner.

4. Chaps keep my pants from a little less wear and tear, especially when I’m ripping. The first place my jeans wear out of I don’t wear chaps is in the place my rope slides across my leg.

And, yes, I do think they look cool and I really want to look like a REAL cowgirl so chaps are a bit of a fashion statement šŸ˜‰šŸ¤£.

Chinks, wooleys, shotgun chaps… ALL the kind of chaps 🄰

It’s my birthday today… so indulge me a moment. It’s my birthday today… so indulge me a moment.

I LOVE my birthday! Not in a get-me-lots-of-gifts-and-make-it-all-about me kind of way. I just love celebrating another year of living.

Over the last year I have made so many memories. I have made new connections and enriched old ones. There have been hard learned lessons I never want to go through again but wouldn’t trade them for anything. I love being a wife and mom but also being a coach, a leader, and a rancher. I love having pretty nails but also building strong muscles.

I love all of this life I get to live!

And I hope you do too.

From one hopeful, happy, struggling, anxiety ridden cowgirl to another and everyone else out there- work every day to build a life that is meaningful to you. And then celebrate it!

PS- no need for birthday wishes here, I’m not here looking for them, just sharing my heart.
ā€œI just want to make my mark.ā€ (Please tell me you ā€œI just want to make my mark.ā€ (Please tell me you are ā€œHow to Train Your Dragonā€ fans with us!)

And depending on how the day goes…
we either do just that…

or make a few marks in all the wrong places.

There are no tryouts. No cuts. But you better believe there are expectations.

They’re not measured in stats or accomplishments. More like attitude, work ethic, and whether you show up when it matters.

Our team has kids and experience alike.
It has energy and wisdom.

The lineup changes from time to time… but I’d say we’ve got a pretty solid crew.

Rocky Mountain Oysters… The delicacy of branding Rocky Mountain Oysters…

The delicacy of branding day that no one partakes in, usually.

There’s always a few castrated bits grilling on the top of the branding box and, I’ll admit that they smell delicious. In order to feel like a true cowgirl, I once indulged and it wasn’t bad. But I just can’t really wrap my brain around eating more than just a taste.

Tell me, would eat them? Have you? I want to know!

I’ve loved ranching for as long as I can remember— I’ve loved ranching for as long as I can remember—though marrying my husband proved I still had a lot to learn about their way of doing things.

It’s been about 10 years since I got serious about roping, and only in the last 5 that it’s really started to click. And now I’m hooked!

Still learning, still improving—but fair warning: if I don’t get to rope, I will absolutely be in a mood about it… but I’ll do my best to keep it to myself.

Did you know we have been running cattle on this r Did you know we have been running cattle on this range for over 100 years? Even before these public lands were claimed as BLM, my husband’s great-great-grandpa raised cattle through these same hills. In fact, this large herd of cows still carries some of those same genetics. Of course there have changes through the years, but we try to do the same they did five generations ago- raise great cattle.

Rancher’s wife tip- consult calendar dates for any Rancher’s wife tip- consult calendar dates for any and ALL possible events, including your child’s birth day.

On this day 16 years ago, my husband left our little college-town home to drive the 3 hours down to the family desert piece to brand. I instead went to my OB appointment where I was told to go directly to the hospital to deliver my baby.

Nothing scary or concerning- both baby and I were perfectly healthy. But of course it had to happen on branding day. I heard the sorted calves loud and clear in the background. And if I remember right, there was a small hesitation where I’m sure he considered staying to brand the first set of calves before coming to the hospital.

Moral of the story- don’t have babies in branding season. It’s best to consult his calendar. On the other hand, birthing little cowboys into such chaos might be the key to them growing into strong, kind, and capable young men.

Tell me I’m not the only one who has to plan life around ranch work

ā€œHello, Ladies,ā€ said in a low, sultry voice. The ā€œHello, Ladies,ā€ said in a low, sultry voice. The most subtle pick up line from the Old Spice commercials, of all places.

We may be in the middle of dropping this years’ calves but that doesn’t mean we aren’t prepping for next year already.

Bull turnout will be here before we know out which means we need to have enough herd bulls heathy, strong, and range ready to breed cows all summer long.

For months we have been testing, doctoring, and buying bulls ready. With the last of them being delivered any day now, we will get everything branded, tagged and ready for their final inspection.

There’s still a little time before turnout, but everything is lining up. Bulls getting ready, cows getting close…
And somewhere in the back of your mind, you can already hear it—

You ever feel like you’re being watched while you You ever feel like you’re being watched while you work… ?šŸ˜…
We had a full panel of judges today, watching every move we made, and I’m sure they were thinking things like ā€œwe’re watching you,ā€ ā€œwhy are you doing thatā€ and ā€œdon’t mess this up!ā€

And honestly… they’re not wrong.

Because whether it’s giving a calf the little extra boost it needs, or raising a boy to step in, work hard, and figure things out—this stuff matters. It’s not always smooth, and we don’t always get it perfect, but it’s worth getting right.

The herd might have a lot more eyes on me, but it’s the eyes from my husband, my kids and the others that are counting on me. Good thing for a lot of love and grace!

Today I’m pretty sure we passed inspection, though. Jury’s still out. šŸ„šŸ‘€

Dear Mother Nature, I’ve been skeptical of the we Dear Mother Nature,
I’ve been skeptical of the weather and your intentions for months now. Could life really be this sunny and warm? šŸ„°šŸ¤”

But now that the calendar has actually flipped to spring, I’m feeling more confident and hopeful that this is here to last. 🄹

Now, that doesn’t mean you should drop snow on us just because I’m relaxing into it, although that still would be part of an Idaho spring. 🤪🤣

We could use a touch rain. The moisture we have had has done so much good but it won’t last long. šŸ™šŸ»

Please tell me not the only one… I’m starting to Please tell me not the only one…

I’m starting to realize I live in a constant state of being in the wrong place… while also being exactly where I’m supposed to be.

At a basketball game? Thinking about what’s happening on the ranch.
Out on the ranch? Thinking about the laundry, the schedule, or where I’m supposed to be next.

Turns out nothing on a ranch waits for you. Not the cows, not the weather, not the work.

And unfortunately, the rest of life doesn’t either.

I used to think if I just planned things better, I could keep up with all of it.

Now I’m realizing that was wildly… optimistic. 🤣🤪

So these days I just do my best to show up where I am, try not to think too hard about what I’m missing somewhere else, and trust it’ll all still be there when I get back.

(Some days I’m better at that than others.)

Give me an AMEN IF you’ve ever felt like you’re supposed to be in two places at once
