The Stream of Life

December 13, 2013 by Allison

Holbrook is in the deseret… really.  Its dry and every time the wind blow our mountains and hills change.  It is so different from the river plain that I grew up in.  The ranch we had was crossed with little rivers and streams- some to play in and some to fish in and all to make it so beautiful.

There are a few little streams in our valley and they all are their own sort of beautiful.  When The Rancher was building his fence they were right by a little creek that feeds out of the reservoir.  They had to cross it twice so I don’t think they were in a mood to admire it, but I sure was!  And now during the winter it really has its own kind of pretty with the dry cattails and crusted wheat, the bits of snow and ice, and the slow moving water.  It just nourishes my soul.

Good Fences Make Good Neighbors

December 10, 2013 by Allison

A fellow rancher from the Curlew Valley decided that it was finally time redo the fence that we share.  For some time they have had trouble with his cows sneaking in with ours and I think he got tired of us calling him to take them back to his side.  So on one a cool November day they loaded up their hammers and nails and got to work.

Fencing isn’t my favorite chore- I’m sure it was the hot summers. But The Rancher likes it. Its one of things that you can really do well.  There’s not anything much prettier than a new, tight, straight fence.

After building so many fences it is second nature to these cowboys.  Without talking they know how far apart to space out the posts, where to put in a brace and all the parts and pieces to make it work.  They get right to it and go until the work is done … or dark.

There was more fence to build than daylight this time, so they went back out to finish the work just last week.  I don’t have any pictures of them working that day because it was cold and snowy.  My warm slippers begged me to stay home!

Back to Sun Valley

December 9, 2013 by Allison

In October I posted about my spontaneous participation in the district Farm Bureau discussion meet.  This last week was the state discussion meet in Sun Valley so The Rancher and I took off a few days to play with other Young Farmer & Ranchers.

The closer we drove to Sun Valley the more exciting this got for me.  I’m passionate about ranching.  I’m passionate about having a family ranch.  I’m really passionate about sharing our family ranching story.  Ya, you know that already… Any way, this discussion meet was right up my ally- an opportunity to talk about issues we face in our agriculture community.

The meet went really well, in fact I had several of the judges and folks from the audience tell me how well I did or that they liked my style.  After the high I was on last year I am already to do it again!

These are the questions we discussed.  I would love to hear if you have any thoughts on them!

1. How should Farm Bureau engage farmer/rancher members, representing all types and kinds of operations (i.e. conventional, organic, large, small and niche markets), to work together to better promote a more positive image of agriculture?

2. How do we encourage young farmers and ranchers to continue to be involved in Farm Bureau?  How can young producers lead even if they don’t hold elected positions on boards?

3. What are the best practices for youth working on farms and ranches to ensure their safety and provide them learning opportunities in the area of agriculture production?

4. US agriculture is one of the major industries for the American economy.  What can farmers do to stimulate more economic growth?

5. How can Young Farmers & Ranchers work with elected and appointed officials to eliminate unnecessary or excessive regulations placed upon agriculture while ensuring that new regulations are justified based on their costs and anticipated benefits?

Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!

December 7, 2013 by Allison

My holiday spirit has taken over my rancher’s wife spirit because I am praying for snow.  You might wonder what- wanting snow has go do with being a good ranch wife… so I’ll tell you.

Actually its rather simple- when it snows it covers the feed.  If the animals can’t find feed they get hungry.  Therefore, we have to start feeding hay, something The Rancher really doesn’t like to do.

So I’m being a little naughty and hoping for more snow.  Let the winter fun begin!

Cowboy Calendar

December 5, 2013 by Allison

I think that I have gotten myself way in over my head, but let’s face it… that’s how I roll.  I just jump in and go with my motto “Fake it ’til you make it!” My latest jump is to make a calendar using my Rancher’s Wife photos.

Every year I look for a calendar that is more than a fat advertisement.  I want something worth hanging on my wall.  With so many fun pictures about the ranch I figured I ought to make one myself.  So I did.  And I think it turned out pretty good.  Here are a few pictures and if you want to see more, check this out.  If it fancies you, let me know and I can send one your way.  I don’t know cost yet but I’m going for not very much.

Lessons Learned From Ranching

December 5, 2013 by Allison

My parents always said that raising a family on a ranch made it easy to teach life lessons. There were lessons of hard work, responsibility and then the fruit of ones labors. Of course it also made it easy to talk about the birds and the bees.

But not all of the lessons to learn from the ranch are easy.  For the first time I was on the mom end of one of those hard lessons.  My son’s puppy was ran over and it was my unfortunate opportunity to tell him and explain that he wouldn’t be coming home. It took a while to set in and when it did he would tell me that he didn’t want him dead or that now he needed a new puppy.

It’s been a lesson for me to learn as much as The Rancher’s Sidekick.  It was so hard for me that they won’t be able play together. It was hard that he didn’t understand. And of course we all struggled with the loss of a little friend.

Happy Thanksgiving From The Rancher’s Wife

November 29, 2013 by Allison

This really is one of my favorite times of year.  I’m not entirely sure why but there is something about the chill in the air, the anticipation of this holiday season and celebrating with friends and family.  It comes after the push of the fall work- weaning, sorting, hauling, selling, vaccinating, preg checking…  (did I miss anything?!).  There is also the farming to do and some fencing and then the winter prep.  But all of this is coming as a result of a good calf crop and a blessed harvest.

Isn’t it wonderful how inspired the first Thanksgiving-ers (I made that up) were to set a day aside to give thanks for their blessings after the harvest season.  Actually that really is how the story goes; the pilgrims had been devastated with sickness and starvation as they reached America.  They may not have made it had a few Native Americans put aside any differences and taught them skills to survive the new land.  It was after their first corn harvest that their leader declared that they all share in a celebration of fasting and thanksgiving.

There have been other distinguishable times in our country’s history that leaders proclaimed it a time of fasting and thanksgiving, primarily after or in the midst of great trials.  In fact it was during the Civil War that President Lincoln officially declared Thanksgiving a national holiday.

I love looking into the history of this holiday, to see what was intended for this holiday.  It was quite religious, so much so that they fasted rather than feasted.  I hope that I, personally, haven’t strayed from its heritage.  No, I didn’t fast but I hope that my thanksgiving was honorable.  Of course we are able to add our own traditions to help it be more meaningful for each of us, but are we still celebrating and cherishing our blessings as we should?

So after another great year of blessings, a healthy family, a good harvest, and a home full of love and happiness, I want to give thanks to family, to the legacy we live, and mostly to a loving Father in Heaven.

Done With the Preg Checking

November 27, 2013 by Allison

I wish I had a dollar for every time The Rancher says, “Well everything is done for a while until we have to do the ______.”  Like he says that we are done moving cows except for the bunch that needs moving in a week.  Or the bailing is done, but there is the field that was just cut that will need bailed in a few days.  I appreciate that he is trying to make me feel good that things are slowing down but I have learned better.

Lately we have heard the preg checking is done.  Yes, for the forest cows.  But then there was the weekend of preg checking the BLM cows.  And then the strays that come in need checked. And the other bunch of strays.  And the other other bunch.  And now it was time the first calf heifers that had been out to pasture near Blackfoot for the fall.

The Rancher called me in one fine afternoon, asking for some help to get the heifers pregged up that night because the weatherman was calling for snow.  For some reason they didn’t want to work cows in the yucky cold and wind.  I always come running when The Rancher asks for help, mostly because I don’t want him to think he can do anything with out me (ok really I just love to help and I don’t want him to stop asking).  Usually I end up giving shots at the front but this time I got to run the back.  And I did a great job, if I do say so myself.  It didn’t leave much time for pictures but I snapped a few before the night was over.

I think that we are really done with the preg checking.  Unless some other ornery cows come from who knows where…  But until then, we are done!

With the time change dusk came upon us and the moon lit the way.  I zoomed in to get a picture and this is what we got.  It wasn’t really this dark, but it turned out kinda fun.

Feeding the Calves… from a while ago

November 23, 2013 by Allison

So I got a little ahead of myself, which means that I didn’t share the pictures from  feeding the calves one night.  So even though the calves are long gone, I am enjoying another look at them.

The calves go out on the old alfalfa when they are first weaned.  Between their ravenous eating and the freezing temperatures, alfalfa stops growing.  Once the feed is eaten down we load up the old two ton with some bails and pitch it out to them.

On this fine occasion it is Rancher Sr. and Cowboy Pete with the pitch forks.

The Rancher, a DIY-er

November 19, 2013 by Allison

I love DIY projects, LOVE them.  The Rancher does too, maybe not the ones I enlist him to do, but he des non the less.  He likes the manly ones that come with bigger or more dangerous tools.  I mean what is a welder if not a really hyped up glue gun, right? šŸ™‚

But seriously, isn’t that really a integral part of being a rancher.  These cowboy need to be able switch between whatever jobs the day calls for- truck driver, irrigator, welder, tractor operator, horse trainer, nurse maid… You get the idea, they gotta do it all.  They are DIY-ers.

This is the feed truck with arms to lift the bails.  Do you see how my creative husband has fanagled it to lift the troughs?  I find funny, but boy it is works darn good.

Here is real picture of The “DYI” Rancher.  Pretty cool.  Finding your own way to get the job done, or being a DIY-er, is part of being a rancher.

Idaho ranch wife + mama 🐮🤠
Living on cattle, cocoa & kids running wild.
Daily ranch life, western style all with a side of dirt.

Cows are funny. They are ready to plow you over Cows are funny.

They are ready to plow you over one second for messing with their calf, and then 2 minutes later completely forget they even have one when they see a patch of green grass.

Did you know they only recognize their calves by their smell? Of course they don’t go by tag number, but I’m not even sure they can recognize markings or color.

Which means these lovely windy days this spring has provided can make pairing up cattle a little tricky.

If only a cow could read…

Growing up I knew I always wanted to be a mom, to Growing up I knew I always wanted to be a mom, to raise a family like I had. I had visions of working together on the ranch and quiet nights watching the sunset together. Ya know, the perfect ranch family.

But as life goes, it certainly hasn’t been that easy.

In fact there were parts of motherhood that I absolutely struggled with. It wasn’t the late nights or all the diaper changes. I could handle messes and the tantrums.

The hardest part for me was that I felt… stuck.

I loved the nap time snuggles, the chubby hands in mine, and the shadow that followed everywhere I went. But still I felt untapped, like I needed to be doing more, contributing to life in a meaningful way.

I told myself ā€œthis IS meaningful work!ā€ and ā€œseasons change.ā€ But there were so many hard days.

Time went on, kids grew and our seasons changed. And motherhood has never been so meaningful and fulfilling as it is now.

I love watching my kids struggle and then succeed. I love talking through the good days of school and love when they need a hug after the bad. Teaching and walking them through first experiences brings me pride and joy I can’t explain.

All those hard days were worth it.

I don’t know if motherhood was meant to be enjoyed everyday or in every season. But I can tell you the hard days of being a mom have made the good days that much sweeter and that much more fulfilling.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. I hope you are finding joy and fulfillment in every season of motherhood. But if you aren’t right now, I promise it will come.

When you see a handsome cowboy in a pair of chaps, When you see a handsome cowboy in a pair of chaps, did you ever wonder why he’s wearing them? Yes, because they look dang cool but there’s a few other reasons.

Here’s why I throw on mine:
1. Chaps help keep me warm on those cool days. That extra layer is just enough to keep the chill from getting to me.

2. Leather chaps are (mostly) waterproof and help the rain off. Of course, if there’s a ton of rain it will seep through but, let’s be honest, I’d be happy for the problem.

3. When you kneel in the dirt over and over, maybe even in a little poop or blood, chaps help keep you jeans a little cleaner.

4. Chaps keep my pants from a little less wear and tear, especially when I’m ripping. The first place my jeans wear out of I don’t wear chaps is in the place my rope slides across my leg.

And, yes, I do think they look cool and I really want to look like a REAL cowgirl so chaps are a bit of a fashion statement šŸ˜‰šŸ¤£.

Chinks, wooleys, shotgun chaps… ALL the kind of chaps 🄰

It’s my birthday today… so indulge me a moment. It’s my birthday today… so indulge me a moment.

I LOVE my birthday! Not in a get-me-lots-of-gifts-and-make-it-all-about me kind of way. I just love celebrating another year of living.

Over the last year I have made so many memories. I have made new connections and enriched old ones. There have been hard learned lessons I never want to go through again but wouldn’t trade them for anything. I love being a wife and mom but also being a coach, a leader, and a rancher. I love having pretty nails but also building strong muscles.

I love all of this life I get to live!

And I hope you do too.

From one hopeful, happy, struggling, anxiety ridden cowgirl to another and everyone else out there- work every day to build a life that is meaningful to you. And then celebrate it!

PS- no need for birthday wishes here, I’m not here looking for them, just sharing my heart.
ā€œI just want to make my mark.ā€ (Please tell me you ā€œI just want to make my mark.ā€ (Please tell me you are ā€œHow to Train Your Dragonā€ fans with us!)

And depending on how the day goes…
we either do just that…

or make a few marks in all the wrong places.

There are no tryouts. No cuts. But you better believe there are expectations.

They’re not measured in stats or accomplishments. More like attitude, work ethic, and whether you show up when it matters.

Our team has kids and experience alike.
It has energy and wisdom.
Cowboys and cowgirls.
Boots on the ground and boots working behind the scenes.

The lineup changes from time to time… but I’d say we’ve got a pretty solid crew.

At the end of the day his pride isn’t in the number he drug in, the fancy loops he threw or how many minutes he spent spinning his rope.

Success for him was when someone he helped strung up two heels instead of him.

Rocky Mountain Oysters… The delicacy of branding Rocky Mountain Oysters…

The delicacy of branding day that no one partakes in, usually.

There’s always a few castrated bits grilling on the top of the branding box and, I’ll admit that they smell delicious. In order to feel like a true cowgirl, I once indulged and it wasn’t bad. But I just can’t really wrap my brain around eating more than just a taste.

Tell me, would eat them? Have you? I want to know!

If there is one thing you can guarantee out here on the range is plenty of dust. We keep praying for rain and have had little bits here and there, but not really much to amount to.

I’ve loved ranching for as long as I can remember— I’ve loved ranching for as long as I can remember—though marrying my husband proved I still had a lot to learn about their way of doing things.

It’s been about 10 years since I got serious about roping, and only in the last 5 that it’s really started to click. And now I’m hooked!

Still learning, still improving—but fair warning: if I don’t get to rope, I will absolutely be in a mood about it… but I’ll do my best to keep it to myself.

Did you know we have been running cattle on this r Did you know we have been running cattle on this range for over 100 years? Even before these public lands were claimed as BLM, my husband’s great-great-grandpa raised cattle through these same hills. In fact, this large herd of cows still carries some of those same genetics. Of course there have changes through the years, but we try to do the same they did five generations ago- raise great cattle.

Rancher’s wife tip- consult calendar dates for any Rancher’s wife tip- consult calendar dates for any and ALL possible events, including your child’s birth day.

On this day 16 years ago, my husband left our little college-town home to drive the 3 hours down to the family desert piece to brand. I instead went to my OB appointment where I was told to go directly to the hospital to deliver my baby.

Nothing scary or concerning- both baby and I were perfectly healthy. But of course it had to happen on branding day. I heard the sorted calves loud and clear in the background. And if I remember right, there was a small hesitation where I’m sure he considered staying to brand the first set of calves before coming to the hospital.

Moral of the story- don’t have babies in branding season. It’s best to consult his calendar. On the other hand, birthing little cowboys into such chaos might be the key to them growing into strong, kind, and capable young men.

Tell me I’m not the only one who has to plan life around ranch work

ā€œHello, Ladies,ā€ said in a low, sultry voice. The ā€œHello, Ladies,ā€ said in a low, sultry voice. The most subtle pick up line from the Old Spice commercials, of all places.

We may be in the middle of dropping this years’ calves but that doesn’t mean we aren’t prepping for next year already.

Bull turnout will be here before we know out which means we need to have enough herd bulls heathy, strong, and range ready to breed cows all summer long.

For months we have been testing, doctoring, and buying bulls ready. With the last of them being delivered any day now, we will get everything branded, tagged and ready for their final inspection.

There’s still a little time before turnout, but everything is lining up. Bulls getting ready, cows getting close…
And somewhere in the back of your mind, you can already hear it—

You ever feel like you’re being watched while you You ever feel like you’re being watched while you work… ?šŸ˜…
We had a full panel of judges today, watching every move we made, and I’m sure they were thinking things like ā€œwe’re watching you,ā€ ā€œwhy are you doing thatā€ and ā€œdon’t mess this up!ā€

And honestly… they’re not wrong.

Because whether it’s giving a calf the little extra boost it needs, or raising a boy to step in, work hard, and figure things out—this stuff matters. It’s not always smooth, and we don’t always get it perfect, but it’s worth getting right.

The herd might have a lot more eyes on me, but it’s the eyes from my husband, my kids and the others that are counting on me. Good thing for a lot of love and grace!

Today I’m pretty sure we passed inspection, though. Jury’s still out. šŸ„šŸ‘€

Dear Mother Nature, I’ve been skeptical of the we Dear Mother Nature,
I’ve been skeptical of the weather and your intentions for months now. Could life really be this sunny and warm? šŸ„°šŸ¤”

But now that the calendar has actually flipped to spring, I’m feeling more confident and hopeful that this is here to last. 🄹

Now, that doesn’t mean you should drop snow on us just because I’m relaxing into it, although that still would be part of an Idaho spring. 🤪🤣

We could use a touch rain. The moisture we have had has done so much good but it won’t last long. šŸ™šŸ»

Please tell me not the only one… I’m starting to Please tell me not the only one…

I’m starting to realize I live in a constant state of being in the wrong place… while also being exactly where I’m supposed to be.

At a basketball game? Thinking about what’s happening on the ranch.
Out on the ranch? Thinking about the laundry, the schedule, or where I’m supposed to be next.

Turns out nothing on a ranch waits for you. Not the cows, not the weather, not the work.

And unfortunately, the rest of life doesn’t either.

I used to think if I just planned things better, I could keep up with all of it.

Now I’m realizing that was wildly… optimistic. 🤣🤪

So these days I just do my best to show up where I am, try not to think too hard about what I’m missing somewhere else, and trust it’ll all still be there when I get back.

(Some days I’m better at that than others.)

Give me an AMEN IF you’ve ever felt like you’re supposed to be in two places at once
